We live in Tidewater Virginia and we are being engulfed by smoke from the fires in the Dismal Swamp and NC. When I look at the windows this afternoon it looks like all of my neighbors are burning leaves at the same time. It's terrible. I hope this doesn't keep up. My husband is getting a headache from it. I tried to go outside to sit on my porch a little while ago. :puke;
Anyone else live in this part of the country? Can you see/smell the smoke?

Seriously, I hope it gets better. Wiiliamsburg and Yorktown areas are beautiful. I visited there a few years back.

We are in Raleigh,NC and when ever the winds shift, we get the smoke, too. Last week, visibility was 1/2 mile with a code red air quality. It was so strange, like fog everywhere but with wood smell. You could smell it inside, even with the air on. They say it will burn for several weeks. I had a headaches all week and think it was due to the smoke. I feel bad for the people in the immediate area.

Ugh, sounds awful. Hope things clear up soon or at least the wind direction changes to give you a break.

It was terrible last night and even with all the windows closed we could still smell smoke in the house. Luckily I have a HEPA air filter in our bedroom and it was effective for getting rid of the smoke traces while we were sleeping.
We live very near the Chesapeake Bay and this time of year the wind switches direction between day (land breeze) and late afternoon/evening (sea breeze, comes from the SE). So just about 4 o'clock when I'm thinking that it will soon start cooling down and maybe I'll be able to sit on my porch during the evening to catch a breeze - no luck, because the breeze is blowing the smoke our way. I checked using Google Map and it's only about 50 miles from the Dismal Swamp, where one of the fires is centered, to where we live. The other fire is in NC and is more like 150 mi. away.
They are predicting that this is going to go on for weeks. The fires are smoldering and even a couple of big rainstorms haven't put them out.

pelagia, Len went outside last night and walked all around our house, he was sure we took a lightening strike because the smoke and he said it had a electrical smell to it. We are really not far from you as the crow flies, we are where the Chesapeake and the Potmac meet and the winds were out of the south all night. We even called our local firehouse and Len was told that smoke and smell are coming from the NC area and it is predicted to continue for days. We too have whole house air filter, we live near Patuxent River Naval Air Station and some of the jets that fly low really leave horrible odors. Maybe some good rain will knock down these fires and we can have some better smelling sir. :waving;

They are telling us in NC that it would take a tropical storm to put out the fire here. The fire keeps jumping the back firewalls. We have been in such a drought for so long, that everthing just keeps burning. And California is dealing with fires, again!
