Title: Grandmother? Eggs ??
Post by: celtic warrior on May 10, 2008, 12:48:28 PM
Here in the U.K. we must have one of the strangest saying around.  "Don`t try and teach you Grandmother how suck Eggs"  Why ANYONE, let alone my grandmother would WANT to suck an egg is beyond me.
Do you have any equally strange sayings in the U.S. ??

Well I learned something new.
Here's what Charles Earle Funk says in "Hog on Ice" (Harper & Row, New York, 1948). "To teach one's grandmother to suck eggs - To offer needless assistance; to waste one's efforts upon futile matters; especially, to offer advice to an expert. This particular expression is well over two hundred years old; it is just a variation of an older theme that was absurd enough to appeal to the popular fancy."

We have odd sayings, I will have to think of one to post.

We have some terrific expressions in Jamaica.  At least I love them.  Here are a few.

Play wid puppy, puppy lick you mout.   (Familiarity breeds contempt)

Cockroach no bizniz inna fowl fight.     (don't get in the middle of an argument that doesn't concern you)

Want i want i kyan get i, an get i get i no want i.   (if you want something you can't have it and if you have something you often don't want it)

Rockstone a riva bottom nevah feel sun hot    (a sheltered life misses out on much that is great)

Walk good.   (Take care)

Too much laughter turns to tears.

Whole kit and kaboodle.

Keep your eyes peeled.

Going to hell in a hand basket.

Happy as a clam.

Mind your beeswax.

It's a dog eat dog world.

Actually I can remember my grandmother sucking eggs. She would poke tiny holes in the ends and suck out the insides. The shell was used to make decorative Santa Claus heads and other Christmas ornaments.

My mom's speech was always sprinkled with these sayings.  I did a presentation at her funeral 'The sayings of Mother'
Too far east is west
If greedy will wait, hot will become cool
Who doesn't have the bump, has the hollow

Here is one from Guyana that fellow teachers love  -
'Every jackass t'ink he pickney (child) is a racehorse'  You know someone who was a D student - now his child is in school and he is complaining if you give the child a C "my child should get an A'!!!

A Haitian proverb
"The goat makes pills - that doesn't make him a doctor"

From both of my parents - "Experience is a school where fools are taught"

As I loved your Jamaican ones.  We have that one all over the caribbean about cockroaches, but with little changes.  In Barbados we say "Cockroach aint got no right at fowl dance".  In creole they say "Wavet pa ni padon duvan poule" (there is no pardon for cockroaches in front of chickens'
