Before I got sick, I used to practically live on my bicycle. I've been able to ride a little bit, but not nearly like I used to. Other medical issues prevent me from getting a driver's license, so I've had to largely depend on cabs and other people to get rides. I knew that mopeds don't require a license to operate, so I started looking at small mopeds and motor scooters. In Indiana, any vehicle that's classified as a moped has all the same regulations as a bicycle, which means I can ride it anywhere except on interstate highways. The "moped" classification also includes most motor scooters that have an engine of 50cc or smaller. I finally settled on a scooter with a 50cc one cylinder gasoline engine. It basically looks like a kid's push scooter that has been "super-sized" for adults, and has a chainsaw engine on the back of it. It goes about 30mph, and gets about 80-100 miles per gallon. I took my first trip on it today, and it already seems well worth the $300 I paid for it. It gives me independent transportation when I'm not feeling well enough to ride my bicycle. I'm on the machine right now, but tomorrow I'll get it out and take some pics of my "weedwhacker on wheels".

I know a lot of people getting mopeds this year. They all want to save the money on gas for quick trips this summer. Given the gas prices, I'm starting to wish I still had mine - I sold it when I got a car a few years ago. Sounds like you are going to have fun on yours, Adam!

Love to see pictures! Sounds like a perfect solution. And sounds like fun. :thumbup;

:thumbup; Adam, good for you. I have wondered about getting Len something like that. Please post pictures and keep us informed on how you like it. :cuddle;

I love the name! :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; Can't wait to see some pix!

That's great Adam! Can't wait to see it.

That sounds like a very fun way to get around. It will be nice to not have to depend on others for transportation too.
Maybe it will allow you to feel more independent. Just be very careful for those crazy car drivers who have a tendency to
overlook mopeds.

When I was a student in France everyone rode a moped. I always wished I had one of my own because anytime any of my french friends gave me a ride they scared me to death weaving in and out of traffic. Because I didn't like it they did it more to freak me out.
Have fun with it Adam and be careful.

Here are the pics. It's pouring down rain so I had to do it in the garage, so the lighting wasn't the greatest. I'll see if I can get a friend to shoot a video of me riding it.
edit: the car is my dad's, not mine

Nice, that exhaust looks really nice on it. I like shiny things on motors lol
So when are you going to lower it and put on some 20" spinner rims?
-
Nice ride!

I heard those things are pretty fast.

Great pix, thanks for sharing. All I can say now is: WATCH OUT SLUFF!!! :sluff; Who ever said that Harleys were so great anyway? >:D :rofl;

Note to self: When I take the scooter for a ride, CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL FIRST! I was out this evening riding around the neighbourhood, and when I was about a mile or so down my street, the engine sputtered and died. I figured it just died because I was stopped at a stop sign and the idle speed of the engine was set too slow, so I restarted it, and it ran for a few seconds and died again. Only then did I check the fuel tank and it was bone dry. I had to walk about a mile back home, pushing the 60 pound machine over rough street and sidewalk. At least I got some exorcise from this ordeal.

Adam that reminds me of when I first got my drivers license. I was 30 but learned in a small town with no traffic. When I came back to the big city I was nervous but drove downtown in rush hour traffic, parked and was so excited and pleased with myself that I forgot to feed the parking meter. Result: big ticket. Bummer.
Glad you got some exercise and I bet you'll never make that mistake again.

I did.

Fine machine there Sluff.

Awesome scoot and bike guys. I was looking at the scooters in Pep Boys the other day. The motorize ones for under 800. I would ride one to work to save on gas right now.

Fine machine there Sluff.
Thanks but I'll bet Adams gets better fuel economy. :)
-
Love the wheels, Adam! With the price of gas going nowhere but up, I am sure there will be many people looking at these types of vehicles for transportation.
-
I am going to look into the scooter price and use it to go to work. The gas prices are riduculous around here.

Nice ride, Sluff.....ever been to Sturgis?

Four times Flip. I rode my old bike to Vegas for the IHD meet last October.

We have near here in Sturgis, Kentucky. It's commonly referred to as "Little Sturgis". It's becoming very popular and attendance is increasing every year. It also contributes about $250,000 annually to local charities. Unfortunaltely no one ever asks me to "show my access".

Haven't been there yet but many Brothers go every year.

Hey two-wheeled enthusiasts,
I've been researching scooters for a while now and I was wondering if you guys had any tips for when I'm shopping. I'm trying to find a used scooter locally that's 150cc and can be services by one of the local motorsports shops. This means I'm staying away from no-name scooters whose brand is difficult to find online.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
