Today I went for a walk after dropping off the kids for school. I went to Lake Elizabeth. I felt my walk was clumsy and slow. Definitely not a well oiled machine.
Lake Elizabeth is such a calming place. Im not sure if Im amazed more at nature here or the people.
Let me tell you why. I saw monks (orange and burgundy outfits), older asian people practicing tai chi, muslim ladies, the mom's with strollers and babies, runners and i saw kids playing at the various playgrounds. All the ethnicities you could think of.
I love living in this area. Im exposed to so much. Although, i was disappointed as well.
Many, many of them were walking the lake while talking on a cell phone. To me a cell phone is a nuisance. Its something that anchors you down to the rest of the world when you want an escape. I'm not sure if im wrong but to me all these people missed the whole point of the walk. What a shame.

It is kind of difficult for me to put this into the correct words, but I sometimes wonder if the phone talkers and those that cannot seem to function without their headphones and music or whatever they are listening to are doing so because they have a hard time just living within their own minds without outside distractions. My wife and myself can spend hours together on a walk or some other outside activity and maybe not even speak, each in "the moment" and content just to have each other near, I feel I'm at peace with my mind and really enjoy the sounds of nature, or small children laughing and having fun.........

WOW, were they the monks from our story in three words at a time?

I think I'm missing out. What story are you referring too, twirl?

I grew up in the woods; walking through forests, finding trillium in the spring, making whistles from acorn caps, living with nature. My Mom was a leader in the American Camping Association and developed new camps. My husband knows if, I am getting overloaded with day to day things, to take me to a forest! Fortunately, the Smokies aren't far and we pick a spot by a babbling creek, and just sit or quietly explore around us. No talking necessary. Just listening---a lost art. My mother allowed no radios, tv or outside communtications, so my summers and weekends were spent learning and appreciating. It was the best gift she ever gave me--learning to be ok with no words or entertainment. I love reading about others that can enjoy the world around them without words.
Migaguiar- your posts are coming at a good time for me. Thanks for sharing.

Reminds me of my Boy Scout days many years ago. No cell phones or radios, not even matches or lighters. We really roughed it and I'll always fondly remember those days.

I want to help as much as i can because to put it simply we could be healthier if people donated.
We have a disease that can be fixed, at least for a short while yet we remain sick.
There are millions of kidneys out there.
If i ever have my 15 minutes my priority will be to make a fuss about it.
I trust the others here will too.
PS there is nothing more relaxing the a hike!!!!!!!!! The kind where you dont see anyone for hours on end.

If those were our monks you should have run.

This reminds me of the song for Gilligans Island.
