Title: Does dialysis affect periods?
Post by: karen547 on April 28, 2008, 07:43:21 AM
I have had my period for what seems like forever now! I don't know what to do and am worried that it also could either be dialysis related or maybe possibly a  kidney infection as well? It hurts a bit when I pee. I am just so tired of it all! I'm missing a day from class because I am so sore and tired. Any input wil be appreciated! :thx;

Karen,  call your doc.  It could be a urinary tract infection or kidney infection but either way you need to know and get it treated.  Meantime, can you drink cranberry juice at all or is it too high in potassium?

Yes it does but usually the other way in that they stop altogether ! It might be worth mentioning it because we can suffer a hormonal inbalance because of renal failure

cranberry juice is kidney friendly. the only time you shouldn't have it is when you are on coumidan.

I'd call your doc! Dialysis (or perhaps just kidney failure in general) has made my periods lighter and I sometimes will skip a month.

I would skip periods too. One time for 9 months! But also, when I did have a period, they were much longer. Sometimes lasting 2 weeks or longer and very very heavy. My GYN finally had to do a D&C and that helped a bit. Periods were lighter, but still irregular.

I only had maybe one period a year for 4 of the five years I was on dialysis.  After my transplant, I got my period 2 days later.  Big big bummer.

Every single time I have surgery, I get my period right afterwards usually while I am still in the hospital!  :banghead;

When I was on the pill, I was having the same problem during the last few months of taking it. It would last for weeks and be extremely heavy. But now that I've stopped taking them, my period if almost non-existent, when I do get it. It's probably due to my kidney failure. If you are on the pill, your long, heavy periods could be because of your pill. You may need to find something else.

My period is the same regardless up until this year.  Now I am skipping months.  Weird.
