Irish hospital removes wrong kidney from child

 April 21, 2008

Doctors removed the wrong kidney from a child who was undergoing surgery at an Irish hospital.

News organizations say the child, who has not been identified, is now relying on the diseased organ. He or she may have to be put on dialysis and added to the list of people who are waiting for a kidney transplant.

RTE News reports that Our Lady's Children's Hospital described the incident as a "significant and regrettable medical error."

"I would like to know when this error was discovered and why the healthy kidney was not transplanted back", Mark Murphy of the Irish Kidney Association tells the Independent.
