Hi all.. just kinda stumbled upon the site.. looked cool, so I signed up..
I'm from Prince Edward island, Canada and I've been on PD now for a little more than 2 years.. I'm have 2 failed transplants and have had kidney disease for about 15 years... I've only been on hemo once, for about a week... didn't like it, don't want to do it again... the first time I was on dialysis, I was 12.. I'm now 28... I feel like I'll be on dialysis forever... dammit, I wanna go swimming again...

Hi Riki, Welcome to the site. Why cant you go swimming? i'm on PD and i've gotten the ok to go swimming, they just want me to swim in private pools, not rivers, lakes, not too sure about the ocean since it is saltwater. (i think) lol, They have pouches you can put over your catheter if that is the problem, i was told i didnt need one, just as soon as i got out to clean my site with antibacterial soap and apply the ointment, dress it and all should be well. Did they tell you you couldnt???

Riki, welcome to the site. I hope you find it helpful as well as being able to rant about this damn disease. Please read through some of the posts and chime in if you want to.

Welcome, Riki, to one of the most caring and helpful communities on the web. Well, you are an old stager when it comes to dialysis. I am sure you will have much to add to our discussions. Feel free to rant, to vent, to cuss (using acceptable language)! This is what this site is for. It is also a means of much useful information, as you will see if you start checking out our more that 6000 posts (I will have to modify this post shortly and make that 7000!)
We have a goodly number of Canadians here, and as a member of the Commonwealth, sharing the same Queen, we all welcome you. (I am from Barbados)
By the way, Prince Edward Island was a very important part of my childhood (Anne of Green Gables).

Welcome to this site.
I have met some of the nicest people here and I am not about to leave.
In regards to swimming you should check with your doctor to get some tegaderm dressing. It is one of the most effective dressings to put over wounds, catheters etc but it's not cheap.
I had tegaderm dressing for protecting my PD catheter when going swimming and I also had it on when I had to return on hemo to put over my tunneled cather ( where it would stay till the next dialysis session ).
If the dressing is good enough to stay on for days and be able to take showers with it etc it will most certainly be good enough for you to go and take a dip every once in a while :)
Don't let details get in your way of enjoying life, just learn to work with them. It's totally possible! ;)
