Title: Major Nasal Congestion
Post by: kellyt on April 15, 2008, 02:43:14 PM
Can anyone help me?  I am having major nasal congestion due to Oak Pollen (I think).  There's very little mucus, which is clear and thin.  My nose goes from both nostrils completely blocked, to the right being blocked and the left being open, to the left being blocked and the right being open.  It's driving me nuts!   I begged my allergist to prescribe me Allegra D, but he refused.  My BP is great and I'm an adult and know what the decongestant will do.  I HAVE TO BREATH!

The other night while eating out I had to take breaks between chewing to breath through my mouth.  Chew, chew, chew, stop to breath, chew, chew, chew.   It was horrible and I'm sure I looked ridiculous!  Anyone know of a decongestant that is safe for the CKD patient?  Over-the-counter if possible!  Home remedy, maybe!?1?

 :thx;

Kelly, have you ever heard of a neti pot?  Sometimes spelled netty.   Here is a link to Dr. Oz explaining how to use it and what benefits it has.  It is an old remedy but very effective and nothing chemical is involved.   Seems a little strange, but many people swear by it.  Might be worth a try.

I have a netty pot.  I think you use just warm salt water, right?  But will it open me up so I can breath?   That's the question on deck.  I'll check out the link now.  Thanks Paris!

If it will open up my nose so I can breathe, I say bring it over!

I tried the netty pot.  Damn near drowned me my nose is close closed!  Nothing like filling your nasal cavity with warm salt water to make your nose and eyes burn like hell!  In all seriousness, I can breathe alittle easier now.  My nostrils are so blocked that when I did the netty it just pooled up in my nasal cavity and didn't drain out the other nostril like it's supposed to.  Let's see how long I can breathe before I try it a 2nd time!  Thanks for reminding me about the pot, though (netty pot).   8)   I forgot I had it.

Kelly, hope the breathing gets better.  We are so limited to what we can take, even over the counter and wondered if this would work on allergies,etc.  Let us know how it goes.

See, Kitkatz jumped right on the "pot' thing!  Thanks Kit, you sounded just like Susie!! :clap;

Claritin works well for me. Also, have you tried a vaporizer?

I use a neti pot quite regularly and like it although I prefer the syringe (no needle involved) system which clears out the sinus area better for me.  I use kosher salt dissolved in warm water and syringe out each nostril twice.  You lean over the sink and then squirt it towards the back of the head.  It's a bit weird at first but is particularly good for flushing away pollens and such.  Neti pot is good too but a little messier I find.  I worried about the salt but you just have to be careful not to swallow the water and a gentle nose blowing at the end helps too.  GENTLE is important.  Good luck.

Funny thing... heh, heh...... I changed my A/C filter (which was embarrassingly filthy) and moved some boxes that my husband had stacked in front of the vent that sucks air into the A/C and low and behold my congestion IMMEDIATELY cleared - like magic!!!   I was so embarrassed.  Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!    :Kit n Stik;
