HI! I am a 37 year old mother of two from northern CA. I was a tech at a dialysis center until June of last year when i had to go out on disability. Kidney disease does not run in my family and we have no idea why I have it. "It' being IgA nephropathy. Looking back now there were signs of my kidney failure, but they were not recognized until Feb of last year. My blood pressure was HIGH, so i went to a new doctor, who started running some tests. As soon as my labs came back i knew I was screwed. I was immediately referred to a nephrologist, who had a biopsy done and wah lah... my life was forever changed. We hoped that we could hold off on dialysis for a while with diet etc, but it soon became apparent that that wasnt going to work out. In August I had a PD cath placed and by September 2007 I was doing manual exchanges. After a month of manual exchanges i went on the machine, four days after I started that I sprung a major leak around my cath incision. The surgeon decided we had used to cath to soon and filled to much and it caused the tunnel not to heal. His suggestion was to give it a month to heal. So we did. I still have residual kidney function, around 15%, so we kept our fingers crossed that I could make it through a month with no dialysis. I was terrified of having a cath placed for hemo. I made it and went back on the cycler, so far so good! We even went a trip to Maui in Feb and everything went perfect. I feel pretty good. The usual complaints...Im tired all the time, and Im struggling with my blood pressure. But all in all things are pretty good.

Interesting......a dialysis tech with kidney failure. Yeah, I bet you knew you were screwed. That is the problem with me going back on dialysis. I knew what I was in for. If you don't know they can fool you for a while.
Glad things are going well so far.
Welcome to IHD. It is a great site.
