Title: Capd nureses, irritating, kind or patronising
Post by: hephziba on July 05, 2006, 12:05:44 PM
ok I have had an exit site infection complete with extra skin growth for 4 months, I have been on anti-biotics twice, my dialysis isnt clearing urea well and so Ive been a bit sleepy for a while now.

what really ticks me off is when we were trained to dialyse we were told any redness on the exit site any oozing and tiredness phone your unit imediatly. but the nurses at the unit just patronize me and make me feel like some school kid wasting their time. so since they were relaxed about the infection we didnt rush to call them or see them when it got worse. then they say" WHY DIDN'T YOU COME IN SOONER !!!". As if somehow I am the lazy one. so yeah we finished the first two courses of antibiotics and it didn't touch the infection, but since it was an emergency the unit phones me up and tells me that they faxed another prescription for antibiotics to my doctor. So I get there and they haven't >:(.

ok, two months ago I am told im not clearing urea well, and they will have to change me to night cycler we say "ok". then they tell me I have to do 5 bags a day untill they train me.  I speak to them yesterday and have they booked me in for training yet... And when I finally get so sick and tired and infected that I am rushed into hospital they will say" Why didn't you call, why didn't you come in, why didn't  you". and you know what I will tell them " Because you treat me like some kind of mentally ill chimpanzee that enjoys hospital. and I dont it stinks".

OOOH, DAMN,  that would piss me off too,  Thank God i was blessed with a very good PD nurse.  I am sorry to hear all that you are going through Heph and i really think you need to go to their "chain of command" and place a complaint, can you imagine if they could do this to you, they could do it to anyone,  how many other people out there are going through the same thing?  And i am sure a majority of them dont even know what the heck is going on with them.  When i was doing Hemo,  you certainly can tell which nurses and which techs really cared and which ones were only there to get a paycheck (i wouldnt let those ones touch me)  This is YOU,  YOUR body, YOUR livelihood they are messing with, dont let them get away with it.  You have a wife that needs you just as much as you need her,  (i think you two are awesome)  So take care my friend and always,  always, ALWAYS remember,  YOU COME FIRST.....;)  you deserve that much!!!

Please may I implore you to remember this: The squeeky wheel gets the oil in healthcare. Never ever ever give up daily or hourly calls to state your concerns until you are satisfied. These folks work for YOU, they are YOUR employees.  Bug the heck out of them until you are satisfied.  You aren't there to make them like you or to not be a bother, you are the reason that they have a paycheck. Good Luck.

I remember when I was on Capd and I did feel that I was being treated as a little kid. I have my favourite nurses in HD but while on PD there were only 2 for that and I felt that both hated me. And I am NOT a difficult person. But I am insecure and quiet. And if they make me feel like a bad child .. I did NOT speak up  :(

That is the thing nurses seem to not realize. How they can make a patient feel. The nurses complain about non-compliance (I swear it is their favourite word!!) yet they belittle you and berate you and wonder why you won't open up to them!!!

In England I have never heard a nurse or doctor complain cos we dont comply, If I say no, they tell me the risks and say ok its your choice, sign a disclaimer.and If we hadnt learnt to say no to them, I would have had my line removed several times more than need be, and my chest would have looked like an old dart board. let alone my groin, those people allways wanted to put groin lines in me, even though they are crap.....

its strange that the nurses would complain in america even though most of you are paying customers.. ???

Bless you all, have a great day, or days or weekends. may loads of Good stuff happen to you all.. ;D

I am actually Canadian and here we don't pay. The government pays for us. But yes, even in the States where they must pay it seems the nurses complain a LOT..
