Title: No Appetite!
Post by: Hephs-little-lady on July 05, 2006, 05:10:23 AM
Could constipation cause loss of appetite on CAPD?  ???

Hi Hephs little lady,  For me it did,  the ONLY thing that worked for me was a cup of warm prune juice, and believe me,  we tried MANY things, lol,   but yep, i drank a cup of warm prune juice and then some water after to help it get in my system faster,  this was at 2am, by morning,   Elvis has left the building.....;)

I had the opposite problem on PD, everytime I did a fill, I had to run to the toilet, bags attached and all lol
Its very important not to get constipated while on PD as it can cause peritonitis which you dont want!
There are medications you can get, I suggest bringing it up with your nephrologist.
How much prune juice do you have goofinya? Its very high in potassium so you would have to be careful with that. It only takes me one prune and Im on the toilet all day  :D

Be very careful with constipation while on PD!

In regards to appetite I honestly can't help. I had the same issue while on PD. I was very rarely hungry and I lost tons of weight on it. Actually the doctors were concerned that I was losing so much weight without trying .... how ironic.

Hi Amber,  i only had about 8 oz. of prune juice, of course i called my PD nurse and she called the Neph and he said it was ok, i dont think i would've did it otherwise, although i was pretty desperate, i just might have :-\  lol,

I'm getting a bit worried about Heph, he's lost about 5kg since Friday. He is eating better now, although he says he doesn't feel hungry, I'm just concerned about the sudden weight loss. Anyone any ideas what could cause this?  ???

What about his evacuation with the Pd? Has it been high or not?

Fluid intake?

Yo yo weight loss while on Pd isn't rare, it's actually a daily occurrence in a sense but 5 kilos seems like a lot but that used to happen to me too occasionally.

He's taking off around 1-1 1/2 litres of fluid extra each day, and probably doesn't equal that in intake.

Maybe I just worry too much. He doesn't feel ill, no high temperature, tiredness etc. If it gets worse I guess he'll have to go to the unit and get checked out.  :(

Hi Goofynina,

Thanx for your concern. He's a bit better today and actually managed to eat quite well yesterday. I took him shopping and let him choose all his favourite foods or just whatever he felt like, so he had a bit of a feast. He seems in better shape today.

Thank you for asking.

Hope you are well too.

His BP is around 120/80 which is really good. he is tons better now though, I think he was a little dehydrated as the other day he drank a ton of water and took lactalose and now he feels much better. And his appetite is back  ;D Thanx for all your help.  ;)
