Title: ?? Medically Unfit ??
Post by: Rerun on March 23, 2008, 04:23:52 AM
At my new dialysis center there are a lot of forms to sign and people to meet and talk to.

On Wednesday of last week the nurse had some papers for me to sign.  One form was from a doctor I had never met.  She said he had filled out a form and I needed to sign it.  Well it basically questioned my current medication and he checked "Medically unfit for a transplant."  WTF
I lost it!  Why am I medically unfit for a transplant?  She didn't know, but just wanted me to sign.  WELL  HEEEEELLLLL NO !!!  I'm not signing any paper without knowing WHY he.... this bastard whom I've never met.... thought I was medically unfit.  AND why they had a meeting without ME present!!  I wanted to know just WHO was at this meeting!!!  She went and got the director and she was all "Oh, don't worry, he just hadn't met you so he didn't know what to put, you don't have to sign that."

Well, GOOD because you would have to pry the pen out of my dead fist.  Why would any professional put such a thing?  What about "unknown at this time"??  So, I already hate the SOB and I haven't even met him.  Although I can't wait because I'm going to rip him a new one.

I wonder how many people just sign the forms with out reading them. Good thing you read them. I don't blame you for raising hell. Here's a little help from Kitkatz's big stick.   :boxing;  :Kit n Stik;  and a Hug for you.  :grouphug;

I was examined by three different medical teams for a transplant, and two regarded me as medically unfit for a transplant, while one said that I was fit.  I went ahead with the transplant and I am doing fine three years later, so you can see from my example how utterly arbitrary these judgments can be.  I think a large part of the assessment is determined by whether the physicians feel their kidney transplant waiting list is already too long or not, since if it is, they don't want to make it any longer by failing to find a reason to exclude you.

Rerun, we had the same problem for years, one would say fit and 2 others said not fit. None of them bothered to read the records or review history. After 5 years I got a really bad attitude toward the 3 of them and they finally sent paperwork to transplant center agreeing to FIT. It was an ordeal but you need to scream (and loud) at these doctors.  :banghead;

 :boxing; Thatta girl Rerun! Don't let them push you around!
What is really scary is that many patients sign whatever is put in front of them, not knowing their fate is sealed.  ???

Unbelievable! And so many centers/workers/nephs would bully the patient into signing it, even if the patient did read it! Good for you for sticking up for yourself!

Oh, Rerun!  How awful!  I'm glad you read that form and didn't sign it.  Now, how do you get that stupid doc to check "Fit"?  If they ask you to sign anything else this asinine, give them the pen and tell them to sign this   :sir ken;

I'm still fairly new to the dialysis/transplant world, but a concern I have is that the same nephs, surgeons, etc., are buying into, owning, setting up, running, and profiting from dialysis centers, thus giving them more incentive (and $'s) to keep patients on dialysis.  Prior to starting dialysis, the only mention of transplant was in a video showing available options.  I had to bring up and pursue the subject with my neph.  Does anyone know of any data on this subject.

I can see your anger over this.
At least you read it and now you can act.
How dare they consider you medically unfit with no explanation.
It's your life there messing with.

wow...just read this and now I wonder what papers I signed my first day of dialysis (did I mention I was looped up on Vicodin as I just had my second nephrectomy?) Guess I'll have to find out and, if necessary, pull out MY  :Kit n Stik;

Rerun,  how are you?  I miss your posts and have been wondering about how you're doing.  I saw a post from you on another thread today (I still have to learn how to copy text) that sounded like you're feeling sad/mad/irritable, you know, like you have kidney disease or something ****ing awful.  Sending some thoughts your way...some wine, beer or whatever else that might in fact be more useful too.

  If you have severe heart problems, that would make you medically unfit - they aren't going to do surgery if you you are likely to die on the table, for example.  Every transplant center has different criteria - being morbidly obese might make you medically unfit as well.
