State passes droopy pants law
Fri Mar 14, 10:47 AM ET
The Florida Senate wants public school students to pull up their pants. Lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches.
It won't become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure.
Florida could join several southern U.S. towns and cities that have passed "saggy pants" laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement -- wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.
Supporters say schools sometimes don't properly police dress codes and parents are often "under aware" of what their kids are wearing to school.
Critics say the measure is unnecessary, arguing that appearance and dress codes should be the responsibility of school districts and parents.
Despite being the butt of jokes, the bill's sponsor, Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat, has said the fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex.
"All we're trying to do now is trying to inform folks that we have a fad now that does not have a very good origination," Siplin said. "We're trying to make an example in school," he added, saying it would help students get jobs and a degree.
The Florida city of Riviera Beach passed its own saggy pants law Tuesday, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.

:clap; :clap; :clap; Yeah! That look drives me crazy. Sometimes I just want to yell at them, "pull your damn pants up!"
-
Perhaps they could do the same here with british builders :rofl;
-
About fricken time! I wish Wisconsin would do it.
-
Now I just wish someone take it a little further. How about a law about women not exposing their bras too. The whole bra strap showing look is so tacky!
-
That's amazing I wouldn't have thought you could legally legislate against a certain fashion if that's what you could call it. The young men in Britain adopt the same look and sometimes I think, one little tug and they [their pants} would be round their ankles >:D

I'm with you paddbear0000! Ladies burn them Bra's .....don't need them :rofl;
-
Who about making it compulsory that all women wear mid thigh length boots? >:D

I have a big problem (I know, I know - it's the liberal in me...) The government cannot start controlling the way people dress. Schools can, yes. I am all for dress codes... BUT, when a government starts controlling the way a person dresses, that is getting to big brother for me... think of other countries that have government mandated dressing, umm... Iraq? Iran? It's an extreme I know, but it's under the same principle. Imagine if they had done this with mini skirts, hot pants, jumpers, bikinis -- people were outraged when these fashions started, but then time passed. It's not a fashion I like, but we as a nation have a constitutional right to dress and act as we please within the law.
:) I love social politics!

I agree Beth. Fads come and go. Legislating against what we call "diaper pants" when guys wear their pants so low, seems like a waste of energy. Are the fashion police going to issue citations?
When I was a teenager we wore low jeans with patches and embroidery, and I know parents were worried that we were going to run off to Haight-Ashbury, live on the streets and smoke pot all day. But it was a generational fad, replaced by yet another fad.

And here for those suffering from "Plummer's Crack!" :rofl;
-
I wish they'd [pull up their pants here in Ohio.
They look like they are going to fall down for sure.
-
I can see banning the droopy pants in school but how are they going to enforce it in public. Are they going to ban very, very low cut fashions for women that looks like the boobs are going to pop out at any minute. :rofl; What about bikinis especially the thongs!! I can see banning it in buildings like schools, etc but when you say to make it law that they are banned everywhere that's infringing on human rights. I hate those droopy pants and wish they would go out of fashion. When we were growing up we ore things that older people probably thought was just as awful!!! Just my :twocents; worth.
-
Anyone who knows me knows I'm for personal freedoms but geez these droopy pant wearers need to uderstand the damaging effects that crack has on others. ;)
-
Will they outlaw mooney gowns, too? :rofl;

Right, so they are going to change the fashion from a dopey look that will eventually fad on its own into some sort of political statement about freedom of expression that will never go away? Uggh. Parachute pants looked just as dumb - that passed. Wearing a rosary for a necklace annoyed a lot of religious people, but that passed when Madonna moved on. It's a fashion statement - ignore and it really will go away. Focus on it, and make it a big issue, and it will just stay around longer.
-
can we outlaw ugg boots too? and noisy high heels? how about really tight jeans and converse sneakers. Maybe we should have enforcers with body armor and gasmasks and M-16's to enforce these new laws. IF YOUR PANTS SAG YOU WILL BE SHOT!!!! ::)
-

I've already outlawed them. :rofl;

Let's see, I went thru the bell bottom era, the holy jean era during school9both bad fashion). Droopy pants makes me think WEDGGY TIME :rofl; :rofl; Seems each decade has to have a bad ritual of jean fashion.

*sigh*... I live in Florida. *land of the hanging chads*
BUt seriously.. it's sooo extreme here it has to pass.
I'm tired of looking at all different color of boxers and
shade colors of butts.. :sir ken;
Did you know one thief got caught (cant remember where) cause he couldnt run from the police
cause his pants wouldnt stay up?
In school major no no.. around me.. heck if it's one of my kids friends .. I go up behind him and yank them up
and ask if he needs money for a belt!..
Hard to enforce yes.. but its beyond stupid here in Miami..
While we are at it.. can we get rid of the T-backs on low riding jeans on females..
I already cured my female off spring of that (yep.. kept giving her major wedgies!!- i can.. im the mom!) :Kit n Stik;
-
that's the cure - make it legal to give a wedgie to anyone wearing the darn things! ;D

T-Backs? What's that? Never heard that term before. Is it where ones thong/underwear is showing? Or is it the tattoo back ther? If it's the tattoo, we call it the tramp stamp here.
-
Oh i know tramp stamps.. living here ... just about her entire HS graduating class was sporting one..
It's the g-string thingy...dont think i could grab a tat and yank up to give a wedgie.. :rofl;

What does it say about these parents who let them have one...idiots, morons :urcrazy;
In my day, parents were allowed to kick our but's for doing something stupid or something that is not of our age group.

In my day my parents did kick my butt.. the old hippy hip huggers? Phffwtt. .nooooo way.. I was sent to a nunnery for school so i would not be lost to societies malices.. (if they only knew the truth!)
Now don't get me wrong.. I do have tats.. and went with my daughter for her first one.. in a quite concealed area.. I would have skinned her if at 18 she got a tramp stamp... later on.. ok.. not at 18..
-
I wasn't allowed to get tattoos, piercings, or wear really short skirts until I was old enough to move out of the house. I would have spanked with a ping pong paddle if I had. Given that punishment, I totally respected what my parents wanted! Of course as soon as I went off to college and I was out of reach, I got my ears pierced twice. I was only 18. As I got older, I realized I was young and naive and regretted getting 2 sets of holes in each ear. When I graduated and entered the real world, I stopped wearing the second set of earrings and let the holes close up. When I turned 25, then I got my 2 tattoos. I was old enough and smart enough to think about what I was doing and I wasn't doing it on some whim because all of my friends did it.
-
Oooooh.. I am sooo going to get my daughter to read your post Paddbear...
Then again.. at 19.. she knows it all right? :banghead;
-
At least the holes close! The tats are a lot harder to get rid of.

When i lived in Nashville my ex-stepson was always in trouble. So because my ex was so messed up on drugs i would go to court for him. The judge at the court house would take those plastic ties (which by the way make excellent hand cuffs) And as soon as a kid entered the court house two cops were there and put the plastic tie in there belt loops hike up their britches and pull the tie. Of course when they left they could cut them. I bet though it wouldn't get cut till they got home. I do hope that no state bans the pleated skirt!! >:D

Baggy pants ban "unconstitutional," rules US judge
Tue Sep 16, 2:02 PM ET
A Florida judge has deemed unconstitutional a law banning baggy pants that show off the wearer's underwear, local media reported Tuesday.
A 17-year-old spent a night in jail last week after police arrested him for wearing low pants in Riviera Beach, southeast Florida.
The law banning so-called "saggy pants" was approved by city voters in March after supporters of the bill collected nearly 5,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot.
The teen would have received a 150 dollars fine or community service, but he spent the night in jail due to a history of marijuana use, the Palm Beach Post newspaper said.
"Somebody help me," said Palm Beach Circuit Judge Paul Moyle, before giving his decision.
"We're not talking about exposure of buttocks. No! We're talking about someone who has on pants whose underwear are apparently visible to a police officer who then makes an arrest and the basis is he's then held overnight, no bond."
"Your honor, we now have the fashion police," added public defender Carol Bickerstaff, who asked the law be declared "unconstitutional."
The judge agreed with Bickerstaff immediately, reported the Post.
Laws that ban low-slung pants are on the books in several US cities, including Delcambre, Louisiana, where offenders can be fined up to 500 dollars or jailed for up to six months.
Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia are among the larger US cities considering similar measures.

Other than the fact the baggy, sagging pants look utterly ridiculous, I thought the bigger issue was that they allowed "thugs" more room to hide their weapons or stuff they had recently stolen. ???
BUT...if there ever is a "fashion police" I would like to suggest arresting all women who insist on wearing low-waist jeans (when they OBVIOUSLY shouldn't) and create the "muffin top". That is so gross!!!!!!!!! :puke;
-
I have to say- I saw a young man who wanted to fight another one in the street a few years back- in the course of his running over to the guy he wanted to punch -he fell over his own pants twice, and when the cops showed up- he fell on his droopy pants and it gave the cops an easier time busting him- maybe their is a good use for them after all!

We call it a SLAG TAG here. :ukflag;
