Boyfriend: Woman Lived in Bathroom
By ROXANA HEGEMAN
Associated Press Writer
WICHITA, Kan. — A 35-year-old woman who sat on her boyfriend's toilet for so long that her body was stuck to the seat by the time he called police had a phobia about leaving the bathroom, the boyfriend said.
"She is an adult; she made her own decision," said her boyfriend, Kory McFarren. "I should have gotten help for her sooner; I admit that. But after a while, you kind of get used to it."
The case drew nationwide attention after Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple said it appeared the Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat in the two years she apparently was in the bathroom.
"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."
McFarren, 36, said he can't be certain how long Pam Babcock stayed in the bathroom because "time just went by so quick I can't pinpoint how long." He said beatings she received in her childhood caused her phobia.
"It just kind of happened one day; she went in and had been in there a little while, the next time it was a little longer. Then she got it in her head she was going to stay — like it was a safe place for her," McFarren said.
But McFarren said she moved around in the bathroom during that time, bathed and changed into the clothes he brought her. He brought food and water to her. They had conversations and had an otherwise normal relationship — except it all happened in the bathroom.
McFarren said he finally called police Feb. 27 after he became worried because Babcock was acting groggy — like she didn't know what was going on, except she was awake.
What emergency responders found when they went into bathroom has left residents of this small western Kansas town buzzing, and law enforcement officials incredulous.
Police found the clothed woman sitting on the toilet, her sweat pants down to mid-thigh. She was "somewhat disoriented," and her legs looked like they had atrophied, Whipple said.
"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."
She initially refused emergency medical services, but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital.
"She said that she didn't need any help, that she was OK and did not want to leave," he said.
Whipple said the county attorney will determine whether any charges should be filed against McFarren.
McFarren, who works at an antique store, said he has been taking care of Babcock for the 16 years they have lived together. He insisted that he tried to coax her out of the bathroom every day.
"And her reply would be, `Maybe tomorrow,'" Whipple said. "According to him, she did not want to leave the bathroom."
She was reported in fair condition Wednesday at a hospital in Wichita, about 150 miles southeast of Ness City. Whipple said she has refused to cooperate with medical providers or law enforcement investigators.
Babcock has an infection in her legs that has damaged her nerves, and there is a possibility she may wind up in a wheelchair, McFarren said.
James Ellis, a neighbor, said he had known the woman since she was a child, but that he had not seen her for at least six years.
"I don't think anybody can make any sense out of it," Ellis said.
Babcock had a tough childhood after her mother died at a young age and apparently was usually kept inside the house as she grew up, he said.
"It really doesn't surprise me," Ellis said. "What surprises me is somebody wasn't called in a bit earlier."

Saw that on the noon news, I guess when you have to go, you have to go, and she really had to go.
-
But what happened when the boyfriend needed to go ???
-
I sure hope he had 2 bathrooms! The image, otherwise, is too disturbing!! :P ::)
-
Wow...

The article I read on this woman said she had been traumatized as a child due to child abuse and began to feel the bathroom was a safe place. Little by little she began to spend more and more time in the bathroom until she finally refused to come out. I feel very sorry for her. She obviously needed help for her anxieties. Let's hope she gets help now.
-
I had read that article this morning. I felt so sorry for her, that she was so traumatized she preferred the security of the bathroom. At least she had her boyfriend there to feed her, etc. But I do wish he had notified someone a lot sooner though.
-
But what happened when the boyfriend needed to go ???
The sink?
-
eeeeeweww. Sluff!!!!!!!!! :rofl; :rofl;
-
I just can't understand what was going through the boyfriend's mind that he didn't notify someone sooner. I mean, geez, she had been there for 2 years! And you can't tell me that she was up and moving around the bathroom the entire time. I mean, her skin grew around the toilet seat. That doesn't happen overnight!

was she cheating on him? Nope
was she trying to watch Lifetime when he wanted to watch ESPN? Nope
was she complaining about him never taking her anywhere? Hell no
Other than never being able to use that bathroom, and that whole "skin growing around the seat" stuff, he was groovin'!!

I saw the headlines for this story and could not bring
myself to read it. Even the one on here I could not read entirely.
Too strange and weird.

The article I read said both the woman and the boyfriend were "somewhat mentally challenged." (Ya think? What was your first clue?) And, this same article also said there were two bathrooms in the home -- hey, that gives the guy a chance to bring in a second woman and have somewhere for her to hang out, too :rofl; . Of course, with two women and only two bathrooms, he'd be stuck with Sluff's idea of using the sink. That would just be too damned nasty!

No... freaking... way....

There was a local story here the other day about an older woman who had been neglected in her home by her daughter. The house was full of trash, with feces, urine, cockroaches and maggots everywhere. The daughter finally called 911 because her mother had a seizure. The EMTs had to cut her out of the easy chair she was in because her skin had attached to it! She had sores all over and the cockroaches and maggots were eating her wounds! What is it with people attaching to things lately?! This poor woman!

good Lord! :puke;
-
ew :puke; :Kit n Stik; the daughter
-
The daughter is now sitting in jail and her kids were taken from her. Thank goodness.
-
And the story even becomes more bizare with the latest news about this couple.
-
What is it? I hadn't heard anything more about them.
-
I read this on Comcast news feeds which was a report I think from The Associated press.
The boyfriend was arrested and charged with a lewd act for flashing his neighbors 17 year old daughter. he story also focused on the womans Aunt who has been trying to talk to her, but she doesn't want to talk to her. The woman said she did not want to talk about the past, but the aunt kept talking about the past and doesn't understand why she won't talk to her, was the jist of the story. I'll try to look it up and paste it here.

Thanks!

Man in toilet case arrested for exposure
March 27, 2008
NESS CITY, Kan. | A Ness City man whose girlfriend sat on a toilet for so long that the seat adhered to her body was arrested after allegedly exposing himself to a neighbor’s teenage daughter and her friends.
Kory McFarren was arrested Sunday for alleged lewd and lascivious behavior and spent the night in jail before bonding out, said Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple.
McFarren, 36, could not be reached for comment. No charges had been filed as of this morning.
McFarren was charged last week with a misdemeanor count of mistreatment of a dependent adult after his girlfriend, Pam Babcock, 35, was found stuck to the toilet in late February. Police believe she stayed in the couple’s bathroom for up to two years and sat on the toilet for about a month.

US woman who lived in a bathroom for 2 years remains hospitalized
The Associated Press
Published: March 27, 2008
WICHITA, Kansas: A woman who spent nearly two years in a bathroom, sitting on the toilet so long that the seat adhered to sores on her body, remains hospitalized and in pain from medical procedures, family members said Wednesday.
The woman's boyfriend, Kory McFarren, 37, called his local sheriff's office in Kansas in late February to say something was wrong with his girlfriend. Authorities who arrived at the home were astounded to find Pam Babcock, 35, stuck to the toilet, which they believe she had sat on for about a month.
Since then, relatives said, family members have not been allowed to visit Babcock at the hospital. Her aunt, Pat Bollinger, the family's designated spokeswoman, is the only relative allowed to call her but must use a password just to talk to her niece on the phone, and the family knows little about her medical condition. Babcock spends much of her time sleeping at the hospital's intensive care unit, they said.
Bollinger said she calls the hospital daily and is told only now that Babcock is the same. She asks every day to talk to her, but Babcock has only agreed to speak once for about 10 minutes.
During that one call, Babcock spoke little and mostly listened as Bollinger recounted happy family memories — time spent swimming, camping and boating — from the year Babcock lived with them in Arizona when she was about 10 years old.
Babcock has not spoken about her bathroom ordeal, she said.
"I didn't bring up anything," Bollinger said. "I just let her know how much I loved her and cared for her."
Bollinger sent her niece flowers and a willow tree angel to watch over her at the hospital. She is also now making a scrapbook for Babcock with pictures of her as a child.
"She is in a lot of pain and she is going to have to go through a lot to even try to have a normal life again," said Carmen McNamara, Babcock's cousin. "She is having all kinds of procedures. Right now, she is in the safest place she has been in 15 years."
The boyfriend, McFarren, has been charged with a misdemeanor count of mistreatment of a dependent adult. He has said doctors told him Babcock suffered nerve damage and is unable to walk.
"Her wounds are still serious. ... She is not out of the woods by any means. She is a very sick girl," Bollinger said.
Via Christi hospital officials refused Wednesday to give an update on the woman's condition.
Relatives tried many times to contact Babcock during the 16 years she lived with her boyfriend, McNamara said. They had limited contact the first year, but have not been able to see her during the last 15 years.
She blamed McFarren for Babcock's refusal to see her relatives. McFarren has said in the past that it was Babcock's choice not to see her family.
About three or four years ago, worried relatives sent the sheriff to their house to check on her welfare, Bollinger said.
"She was still on her feet," Bollinger said. "When the deputy came back he did say he got to talk to her. But she was very upset with me that I had sent the sheriff — but I also note her boyfriend was there when she called me back."
Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple could not be reached Wednesday for comment on whether his department had any record of officers doing a welfare check on the woman.
McFarren told authorities that Babcock feared leaving the bathroom and may not have left it in two years, although he said he was unsure how long exactly she was in there. He said that he took her food and water daily, and that he repeatedly asked her to come out but that she usually replied "maybe tomorrow."
"The only thing I am guilty of is I didn't get her help sooner," McFarren told The Associated Press earlier this month. He could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
"We tried many times to contact her — to let her know we loved her, to send her clothes, to send her presents — but we didn't hound her," McNamara said. "She is an adult and she isn't mentally retarded or slow."
