From the NKF of Indiana --"Billy-the-Kidney" - We need energetic, fun-loving volunteers to wear our mascot, "Billy the Kidney". Billy makes appearances at various events to raise awareness about kidney disease prevention and organ donation. Events may include health fairs, community activities, schools, malls and dialysis units. Billy does not speak, but waves, dances, and interacts with onlookers.
Volunteers must read and sign a usage policy and liability waiver. Wearers must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18 years old, a parent or guardian must sign the usage policy/liability waiver.

Kidney Health Australia will use World Kidney Day on 13 March 2008 to launch a national awareness campaign on the importance of Kidney Health to children and their parents with a strong focus on choosing water nature's choice as their drink of preference. The campaign to be spearheaded by 'Billy the Kidney' and using the theme Amazing Kidneys will promote the key message that every day adults kidneys filter 200 litres of blood - a remarkable feat for two small organs the size of our fists which every year process 73,000 litres of blood.

Great, now another misconception we will have to deal with.

After looking at those people will think kidneys look like hot dogs.

Ok it's not a kidney, but I gotta show you. I guess we should be grateful that THIS isn't the mascot invited to kidney events.
A bunch of health departments and AIDS groups have created Phil the Sore. You have to check out the website name - stopthesores.org. He's a little Syphillitic (is that how you say that?) sore cartoon character. He's supposed to make people with open sores on their genitals take notice and practice safe sex. The ad campaign is geared toward homosexual men. This is one of the subtopics on the website: "Phil kicks off the Campaign. We set a huge syphilis sore loose on the streets of L.A." They send out their mascot character to gay pride parades and stuff.

The guy behind the suit was at my college and asked if I wanted to be in the suit. I said nope, not a chance, better you than me. Which we then talked about if I could be an organ donor, but I get two diferent answers. We have a transplant seminar in May put on by NKF of IL where each area hospital has a booth of  their program, pharm. companies, NKF, Baxter, Medicare, and a few others have displays and then there are different break out sessions to hear different speakers on various topics. Not sure if he will be there this year though.

If you've followed this thread you'll know there have been a few "guest" mascots, and here's another liver. Looks like he's a little wilted.

"Alfie the Liverman, representative of the American Liver Foundation, added a game winning homerun to his resume, capping off a monumental victory at T.C.'s Annual Mascot Softball Game. The game was played in front of thousands on Love Your Liver Day at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN. He would also go on to be named player of the game that day. However the affect he had on the field that day can't compare to what he means to people off of the field."

Kenny the Kidney (Photo below. His back has large colored cysts, seen in the video.)

From his profile:
Kenny is a special kind of kidney -- he's a giant polycystic kidney.
For every 500 people you see, everywhere in the world, at least one of them has PKD.
And even though PKD is really common, most people have never heard of it.
Please help Kenny spread the word, so that we can cure PKD, and fix millions of kidneys around the world.

The staff and students at Holland College in Canada received a request to build a kidney for the Kidney Foundation, with the idea of creating a mascot to raise awareness for the foundation.
It took about a week to construct the mascot, and then a little more time was spent fine-tuning it to make sure his wiper motor-powered arm was up to the task of waving for prolonged periods of time.
He debuted (with the lobster claw he’s currently sporting) at the Summerside Lobster Carnival parade earlier this month.

The page says, "The Gift of Hope mascot, Morgan D'Organ, is on the road for his annual summer tour. When he's out, people always try to guess what is (he's a liver). What do you think he looks like?"
The answers range from bubble gum to pancreas to whoopie cushion!  :rofl;

Could they be the first Nephron mascots?

EDITED TO ADD: According to a caption on their Facebook page they're called "morphsters"

I have no idea.

DON'T BE DISSIN' MY SCHOOL, MAN!!!  *LOL*

it's a technical school, I guess... they call it a community college.. it combines things like adult education and GED with vocational classes, business, IT.. The Culinary Institute of Canada is a part of it, as is the Prince Edward Island Police Academy.

I see this particular kidney mascot on a regular basis, most recently the first of this month, and yes, he still waves.  *G*  There was talk of a naming contest, but I'm not sure if it ever came about

Not a kidney, but had to post it...

The Ultimate Recycling Challenge in Ontario, Canada featured organ and tissue transplant recipients, donor families and staff on site to answer questions and assist the community with registration. There was also an informational video, a children’s workstation and appearances by mascot Cardiac Carl.

Driving without a seatbelt (or a roof!) obviously distracted - eyes not on the road. Again, I say, are mascots allowed to drive?

Is this part of a subtle campaign to increase organ donation by modeling risky behavior?
