Hello everyone, My name is Jason and I am 35. I have had two kidney transplants and have recently found out that I will have to go back on hemo within the next few months. A quick history of my situation. I was born with kidney disease and knew from a very young age that I would need a transplant at some point in time. I have no siblings so my parents were both tested and turned out my Mom was a match. So when I was 20 it was time for my transplant. All went perfect with a few minor bout of rejection. Then somehow I ended up with CMV which pretty much caused sever chronic rejection. So after 3 years with my mom's kidney I was on dialysis. (I never had dialysis before the transplant because we knew that it was needed and I was transplanted before dialysis had to be started) I had a fistula done about a year before I started dialysis so when I stated I had an access already, mind you not a very strong one. After a short time on the main floor of hemo I went on to do "self care" at the same hospital, where I did pretty much everything myself, mind you I hated doing my own needles. Well I stated dialysis in January of 96 and on February 9, 1999 I got the call that they had a kidney for me. Had the transplant (cadaveric) and all went absolutly perfect, no rejection nothing. But.... in 2002 I had an absess (sp?) whcih burst and I went septic. Needless to say this damaged my transplant severly. I went from a creatine of 120 to 680 then the doctors were able to get it back down to around 280, which was much better. But they told me that the transplat took a lot of damage and that more than likly things would progressivly get worse over the next few years. Well I now have a cr of 450 and have to go see a vascular surgeon on March 11, and find out about having another fistula tied in. I had the old one tied off for my job.
I still work full time in a factory as a welder, but I now find that I am very tired again and usually work and sleep, and try to spend time with my wife and 9 yr old tiwn boys.
I am also very interested in home hemo, as here in the London area (Canada) they seem to really try to promote home hemo, but I need to do more research on that and I hope to learn lots on this site. I really look forward to your input and information and hope that I can help whereever possible as well, as I do have quite a bit of knowledge as well.

Sorry to hear your going back on hemo, I guess you really know what your future holds. There are a few topics on home hemo and the difference it makes. You have been at this a long time so you should have an idea what your getting into which is more that some do. I wish you luck my friend and know that we are here for you. Don't be a stranger.

You came to the right place to learn about home hemo - there are a lot of threads on that issue, explore and I am sure you will find every aspect of home dialysis discussed here. Sorry your TX failed but rest assured we can make it either way!

Thanks to everyone, for the welcome. Since I first posted with my situation, I have met with the home hemo unit and the surgeon. I have a fistula done tomorrow and so far it seems like our house will be fine for the hemo to be done here. i will keep udated.

Hi Jay
I'm new here and I'm from Toronto. I did home dialysis from 1980-1985 (with some months in hospital thrown in there) and I'm about to go back on dialysis probably around June so that sounds a lot like what you're facing. I'm having a new access created on Apr. 15th, which is fast approaching so maybe we can keep our fingers crossed for each other. I much preferred home hemo to in center and also much prefer needling myself. Doesn't hurt nearly as much in my opinion but of course everyone's different. I love your small town and have been there often. I used to see about 7 or 8 plays a year in Stratford but mostly stayed in St. Marys. This is a great site and I look forward to hearing more from you.
