Title: I slept with Marvin last night
Post by: petey on February 25, 2008, 05:13:28 PM
Yep, Marvin and I actually slept in the SAME bed last night for the first time in over a month (don't get the wrong idea -- we're married).  He went to the hospital on Jan. 24 and stayed for three weeks.  When he came home, he had two incisions on one side (thoractic pacemaker placement) and a wound vac on the other side, so he couldn't lie flat in our regular bed.  I set up his hospital bed in the middle of the den so he could be comfortable and in the middle of the "action" (like there's a lot of it  :rofl;) in our house.  The hospital bed let him move up the head and the foot and made it easier for him to get comfortable and easier for him to get in and out of bed.  He's been in the den hospital bed for almost two weeks.  While he was there, I'd sleep on the couch beside him for part of the night and then get up and go to our bed down the hall (I put a whistle beside him in case he needed me and I got up numerous times in the middle of the night to check on him).

Last night, Marvin said he wanted to try to sleep in our bed again.  Well, we had a problem...the whole time he's been out of our bed, my dog (Hop-Sing) has taken over Marvin's side of the big king-sized bed.  Before, Hop-Sing always slept in the middle between us, but with Marvin not in the bed, Hop-Sing brought ALL of his toys (about 50 of them) and spread them out on Marvin's side.  Hop-Sing would then sleep on the pile of his toys.  Last night before Marvin could get in our bed, I had to move all of Hop-Sing's toys back to his toy box, and he (Hop-Sing) was NOT happy.  Anyway, the toys were moved and we slept together again.  It was sooooo nice to reach over and touch Marvin's arm -- my way of just making sure he was okay  (no hanky panky --  yet!).  Of course, Hop-Sing resumed his spot between Marvin and me.  Marvin said he slept the best last night he's slept in a long time, and I slept really good, too.  Hop-Sing was the only one who seemed "put out" with the whole situation.  Poor Hop-Sing!

Can you believe that a simple thing like sleeping (and just sleeping) together could make two people so happy?  I'm grateful for the little improvements in Marvin's life!

That's great Petey!
I'm so glad Marvin is feeling better enough to move out of the hospital bed.
That's a sure sign of improvement.
Poor Hop-sing.   :)  So I'm curious, how did the dog have a name like that?

Petey,

I am so happy that you have your husband back in your bed.  Speaking as someone who currently sleeps alone, I am jealous as all get out!

I can only imagine how great the bed must have felt to Marvin.  I end up spending so many nights on the couch either because I can't sleep or because I am throwing up and don't want to disturb my husband---it is always a pleasure to sleep a full night in my bed.  Simple pleasures we take for granted.   Don't you love clean sheet day?

I know exactly how you feel. Because I was on nocturnal before the transplant, I used to sleep in another bedroom when I was on treatment every second night.

The last line in your post Petey said it all for me, that's exactly how I have felt since the transplant  :cuddle;

and guess what Woofa has had to do the same, he sleeps at the bottom of our bed too !

Poor Hop-sing. :) So I'm curious, how did the dog have a name like that?

Hop-Sing is a Pug/Pekingese mix.  When we were on the way to pick him up as a wee pup, my mom called me to see if she could talk me out of getting another dog (my last one had died a couple of months before -- Mom doesn't really like dogs, but for some reason we always had a "house" dog when we were growing up).  So, Mom says that Pugs and Pekes are both of Chinese origin and both breeds were considered royalty to the Chinese.  "You should select a royal-sounding Chinese name for him," Mom recommends.  So, I hang up and tell Marvin what Mom said.  "Do you know any Chinese names?" Marvin asked me.  "Nope -- how about you?"  Marvin thought and thought, and then he said that he remembered a tv showed he watched as a little boy -- "Bonanza" -- and the Cartwright family had a Chinese cook named Hop-Sing.  That's how he got him name -- my mom was NOT impressed!  But, we think it's original, and he's the only "Hop-Sing" at his vet's office.

petey,  :cuddle; I'm so happy for you. It is the simple things that can make you so happy.  :yahoo; I have slept on the couch for years. When Len first came home from the hospital in 2001 we had a hospital bed put up in the living room, Len was hooked up to small bowel feeding tube, TPN, and saline. I slept on he couch beside him and would get up quickly when alarms sounded. We have since gotten an adjustable bed, and I cannot sleep at such a steep angle (that Len must sleep), it kills my back. I'm a light sleeper anymore, and with all the times Len gets up during the night, I couldn't tell you the last time I have slept through the night. Our 2 yorkies sleep with me but go and check on Len when he gets up. They are so funny. They too like to sleep with their toys and it's fun to roll over in the middle of the night and have something squeak at you.  :rofl;

Petey,
Good for you!!!  I do know how good
that can feel, I too was on the couch for
quite a while also - and when they are
in hospital, it is impossible for me to sleep-
in bed alone, so I am back on the sofa!
Sending best wishes to you and your Marvin,
and Hop-Sing, also :clap; :clap;

How romantic! He still wants to sleep in the same bed with you. I think it's a wonderful expression of love.

Everyone at my house slept gooooood last night, but Hop-Sing is NOT happy!  He apparently had decided that "daddy's" side of the bed had become his territory.  He's now back to the narrow strip in the middle; however, he did manage to drag five or six toys back in the bed with us when Marvin wasn't looking.  Oh, life is good!

I'm glad my dogs are Italian greyhounds.  They don't take up as much room!

Sleeping next to your husband sounds nice.  I forget what it's like.  But I do know how our cat likes to take up room and push the both of us over when we're watching TV.

Glad to hear life is good Petey.  Ahhh....the simple things.

"Can you believe that a simple thing like sleeping (and just sleeping) together could make two people so happy?"

Yes Petey - I can imagine because I had to go two months (hospital stay and then couldn't climb the stairs once home) at one time before I could climb back into my bed to be beside my husband.  Best sleep I had in two months too I might add.  It can be such a restful sleep.

Take care
