Title: I'm new, I'm bloated - does it end (CAPD Dialysis)
Post by: mmmmdeedee on June 18, 2006, 09:25:28 PM
Just wondering if this bloated feeling will stop after my stomach cavity gets used to the solution being drained into it. I am only putting in 1500 right now (2.5 and 4.25). But I don't think I can take any more fluid in my stomach. Can't eat much and none of my clothes fit. Is this normal. I don't remember it being like this the first time.

Thanks,

Dee Dee

Dee Dee,
The only time I used a 2.5, I felt very bloated. I was using 2L and by the time the dwell was over, had pulled too much fluid in. I would expect it to get better. Why are you using 2.5 and 4.25? Do you need fluid removal? Too much 4.25 too often will damage the peritoneum from what I have heard.  I should talk---I only use 1.5s in 2L exchanges overnight with a cycler and am dry during the day so really do not have problems with bloating.  I do hope it improves for you though.

Hi,  I am in my 3rd week of CAPD and it took me this long to get used to the feeling of being bloated,  it's not so bad anymore, your body will get used to it too.  Dont give up,  thanks to the help and the patience of my PD nurse,  i stuck it out and everything works it self out in time.  Good luck,

You will get used to it. Took me about 2-3 weeks. I actually ended up being more uncomfortable with no fluid in. Ginger is right, you shouldnt be using 4.25 unless instructed to do so, or if you are very overloaded, which you shouldnt be if you are on a restriction.

Ya you get used to it, but I remember how it made my stomach pertrude and how at work when one girl was taking off time to have a baby the office put MY name because they thought I was pregnant!!!

Sandra is waiting for someone to mention it....she looks like she is about 4 months pregnant. I have another question, do you gain weight from PD? I mean overall.
I feel so sorry for my daughter. This disease is really doing a number on her.
My love goes out to all you brave people.

Well ... it does have destrose which is a sugar so I would say yes but bot a significant amount. I only gained 10 lbs in the 4 1/2 years I was on PD this time around.

I was worried about gaining weight when i started PD but since i've started, i tried to stay away from salt and sweets and i have lost 14kilos so far,  it all depends on the person and the way they care for themselves,   I think the fact that i am able to drink a little more, i dont eat as much, when i was on hemo, because i couldnt drink, i would eat,  so i am pretty happy with the decision i made,  it took me some time mind you and i had a really rough time but that goodness i stuck it out and my PD nurse was kind and patient enough to walk me through it....

Thanks for the replies! I am now on the cycler at night. Kind of scary. I still get a lot of alarms regarding low drain amounts or something like that. But I do get to walk around empty during the day. Which, by the way is uncomfortable. Why is that?

I feel alot better now though. I am currently using the 1.5 and 2.5s. 9 hours at night. 6 cycles. I was using the 4.25s just because I was gaining weight and it was only once  out of the four times daily.

I was full during the day but I did notice that if I was empty (I tried it once) it feels uncomfortable because your body gets used to the fluid. But at first I remember how I was not used to the fluid in so I wanted to be empty. After a bit I didnt want to be empty because it was uncomfortable without.

Your body gets used to being full as your peritoneum stretches. When your empty, your peritoneum isnt stretched, so I think this is why it is uncomfortable. If its really bothering you, ask if you can run in a bit of fluid to take the edge off during the day. I used to get pain from my catheter poking around, so I ran in 200 or so mls so it could float, which stops the pain.
I used to do 6 exchanges on the cycler overnight, then at the last phase it did a fill. I left this in until the next night. In total I was on the cycler for 15 hours, so the day bag wasnt in for long before draining it out on the cycler the next night.

About gaining weight on PD....there is alot of sugar in the bags, so if you are trying to lose weight it is very hard. You may gain a bit of weight, but Ive not heard of it causing large weight gain. I lost weight while on PD, but I put that down to being sick as a dog 24hrs a day, and having to carry a bucket with me everywhere including in the car!

I did notice that when I was empty, my exit site was a little more sore. It doesn't seem to be as bad now. But I think because I am laying down while dialyzing, I'm not totally emptying. Because when I hook up the next night, I am able to drain about 200ml on the intial drain. So maybe that is helping me a bit.

Only problem with that is I get a few alarms in the night because I'm not emptying everything that's going in. Putting in 2000ml and only taking out between 1700 and over. Alarm goes off. Oh well. Not too bad I guess.

I have been gaining a few pounds but only been out of the hospital for a few weeks. I figured it was just not eating hospital food!

hmm... well the Peritoneal Function Test (I think it is called) should tell you if you are getting good clearance/results. Maybe you need to go on a lower Destrose dialysate?

I used to get problems with not draining enough too. I found if I layed on the side where the catheter is while draining, it got the extra bit out. It can be a pain though, bit like nocturnal hemo, you have to lay crooked to keep your arm stable.

Yeah, I found that when I lay on my side, I get better drains.

Yesterday though, I was bloated way out of proportion. Stupid question again. If I eat a lot during the day, does that make a difference on how bloated I will be when filling?

It kind of felt like the first day of dialysis. Totally bloated out.

I got really bloated too if I ate a large meal, I still do now, not sure why though. I think it must add to the fluid that is already accumulated around my abdomen.

10 months ago when i started PD I did feel very bloated and as well started with 1.5L and worked my way up to 2L. It does get better. The closer you are to empty time you will feel the most full. I couldn't eat around that time so don't worry.  If you are on the cycler you can do a manual drain of various amount to make you more comefortable for example if you had a big supper then filled you may empty 200-300mls?  Try that. Also regarding the weight gain ... I gained 17kg in 10 months but some of that is healthy gain since I was ill leading up to the PD.  I totally understand where you are coming from. I am always mistaken as pregnant when filled and out and about.  You will adjust. Good luck!

OK, I'm on day 2 of CAPD and agree that it is pretty dang uncomfortable.   Bloat, heartburn, dizzy, walking into walls and putting food in my mouth is a struggle.

I'm on 1.5 - 2000 ml bags, and feel OK until the last 400-500 mls are going in.  I was told it would take approximately 20 minutes to drain, but my body is pushing 2100-2800 out in 7-8 minutes.  Does anyone else drain this fast?  I would guess that I was started on 2000 ml because I'm 5'10", but I think it may be too much.

I was started on 1500 and moved up to 2000. I am only 5'3" lol It is very uncomfortable. I thought I was the only one that lost my balance when I started PD! lol I was walking into stuff also!! Anyway, I drain kinda quick too, but not as fast as you. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to drain 2000. I don't usually get anything extra off, and I don't really swell. I guess that's a good thing!! lol It will get better. You'll get used to the fluid being there, so much so that you'll forget it's there! Just like the tube!! lol

I asked my dialysis nurse if I could decrease my last fill by 200 ml. so I could be more comfortable.  Then I decreased another 300ml. on the last fill and waited to see how my numbers read on lab day.  All was good, but I must admit the first fill is uncomfortable since it is stretching my peritoneum from what I carried all day.  I am much less uncomfortable during the day with less heartburn , etc., but please check with your nurse or Doc. before trying this.  Just my  :twocents;   ;)

I don't think there really is a way to deal with it. I just let people think what they want.

I still have that problem, looking pregnant, after almost a year of being on dialysis (capd).
My nurse thought perhaps because I am short (5ft,1 inch), that it just 'stuck out' more.
I try to not use as much fluid during the day when I am up and around, and use more
during the evening, on the cycler. I STILL wobble sometimes when I walk!!
That, and I FEEL pregnant, the aching sides, etc.

I just wanted to say this to you Ginger, everyones body is different. I never used a 1.5% EVER, as it pulled off NO fluid for me, and I would then get fluid over-loaded. I only used 2.5% and 4.25%, everyones body is different and she has to do whats best for her and what works for her.
