Title: After the surgery, how soon for visitors?
Post by: Chicken Little on January 26, 2008, 11:36:52 AM
After the transplant were you put in a regular room, where you can have visitors, etc., or did they isolate you?

Jenna's first 24 hours were in ICU. Her siblings could visit for a very short time and were all required to scrub first. Then her hospital puts all transplant patients in private rooms to reduce the exposure to illness and germs. No fresh flowers or plants were allowed. She could have visitors at that time, but we kept it to a minimum since it was January and colds and flu were going around. All visitors had to use hand sanitizer. She was only in the hospital for 3 days.

I was not put in ICU at all. After about two hours in recovery, I was taken back to my private hospital room where my husband was waiting. Had visitors the next day (mostly family that day, though). My surgery was Wednesday night, and on Friday my boss and two co-workers came to visit. No one said anything to them about hand washing, etc, but my boss's daughter had been born with a heart defect and he was used to the whole germ thing, so washed his hands without being asked...the other two followed suit. I was also told no flowers or live plants, but that was due to the bacteria that could grow in the water/soil. They said once I got home, it'd be ok to have those things. I was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon (3-4 days post-transplant).

I had visitors as soon as I woke up.  My family and girlfriends were waiting for me as soon as I got to my room.   I don't think I was alone during any daylight hours.  They had to scrub and wear masks the entire four days I was in the hospital.
