Jeez, I registered here forever ago - and now I'm introducing myself.
My name is Steve. I'm 29, and I've been an ESRD patient since New Years Eve, 2002. I'd been sick for a while, with random symptoms that got worse and came to a head just before I was to go out and get rowdy on NYE 2002. Needless to say, when my blood pressure was 220/180 and they rushed me to the hospital, I manged to yawn and say "Can we hurry this up? Duder's gotta go party." It really put a crimp in my party when they stuck a perma-cath in my chest, and told me I needed dialysis. My initial response was, "Okay, just for tonight right?"
Boy, did I learn a lot.
So, after a year of dialysis - my father donated a kidney to me. Transplant, initially went great. Dad and I were okay, and I ran around my house with abundant energy, gleefully carrying around a measuring jug of urine just to prove to people that "I could pee again."
A month after my surgery, the surgeons wanted to clear up a lympocele fluid collection that occured when my lymphatic channels didn't heal up right. In that surgery, which was supposed to be an overnight procedure, they damaged my kidney, almost killing it, me and everything that is cool about me. So, I spent two months in the hospital recovering and watching lots of bad television.
My kidney sort of recovered, and for three years I had a pretty poor cleareance rate (3.5 creatinine) but enough to keep me off dialysis for three years. I returned to Hemodialysis last year, to great fanfare, and I'm back on the transplant list now.
I have a HUGH A/V fistula in my right arm - so big and healthy it worries some doctors. Oh well.
I really hate diaylsis, but I do it - and I try to keep the best outlook I can. I have the good days and the bad days, but overall - I still lead a semi-charmed kind of life.
When I'm not dialyizing, I play guitar and sing in several bands, and do studio work. I write and make little films - I hope to make an independent film this year. I'm also the founder of an independent computer game company - and that's lot's of fun.
I'd like to kick in my two cents around here, and hopefully give and get some great advice.
~Steve

Welcome Steve to ihatedialysis.com,
Seems you have a pretty good outlook on your situation. So much for new years partying in 2003 for you but I hope you made the best of it anyhow.
It's great to have you here and I hope you learn a lot about ESRD and dialysis. Feel free to share your story and /or experiences at anytime.

Great to hear from you Steve,
It's always nice to hear from some one your own age going thru this... I'm the youngest person at the center by probably about 25 - 30 years so as you can imagine it's been hard relating to anyone.
Friends have mentioned that I have become crotchety and afraid of change... haha

hey steve-o! i think we should get a dialysis band together. you play guitar, i drum, all we need is a bass player and maybe a keyboard?
the kidney foundation might fund us if we approach it right, and we can tour to bring awareness of the condition to rockers everywhere! :yahoo;

Hey - thanks for all the kind welcomes. I'm very excited to have found this resource, and I plan to make frequent stops by.
If anyone needs to get in touch with me, my email address is alexansg @ yahoo dot com - or you can PM me here.
I run a gaming website, as mentioned, at www.infamous-adventures.com - stop by and check it out if you like old school adventure games. (And by old-school I mean late 80's-early 90's. I'm ashamed that that era is old school.)
See ya round, kidney-bretheren.
