Title: Heart failure
Post by: Deanne on January 21, 2008, 10:04:16 AM
A friend surprised me yesterday. She has a friend who's 20-year old son just received an artifical heart to keep him going while he waits for a transplant. My friend took me by surprise by thinking that once he got the transplant, he would be a "normal", worry-free person again. She was shocked / horrified when I told her that transplants aren't "cures" and that for the rest of his life, he will be on anti-rejection medication and will have to worry about problems and rejection.

Please send good thoughts and prayers for Lee -- the young man. Until October, he thought he was a perfectly healthy young man. Then suddenly, they didn't know if he'd survive until the next day. He can only use the artificial heart for 6 months and will be in intensive care until he either gets his heart or loses his battle.

I will keep Lee in my prayers.  I feel so bad for him.  My husband (before I was diagnosed) thought you could be weaned off anti-rejections drugs after awhile.  We learn as we go, don't we?   Tell your friend that lots of us will be praying for a good transplant for Lee.

Heavenly plans seldom make earthly sense.  I will be praying.

Love, Mimi

Lee needs some more prayers. When he had the artificial heart hooked up, they had to remove him from the transplant list while he recovered from that surgery. They thought it would be about a week before he could go back on the list. It's been over two weeks now and he's in worse shape than ever. Something happened that made one of his lungs collapse and he almost bled out. He had to have 22 units of blood and more surgeries. He's in a drug-induced coma now.

My prayers are with Lee and his family. Sudden and young make this oh so much harder to deal with. Thank you for bringing it to our attention so we can pray for him.

Lee is in surgery to receive a new heart right now! He managed to pull through all the complications he had from getting the artificial heart and was re-listed on the transplant list.  :bow;  :clap;  :yahoo;
