US Congressman Raising Awareness For Kidney Disease

Submitted by Antwan Harris on Mon, 01/07/2008 - 6:27pm.

Macon, Ga. -- The rising costs of dialysis treatment along with sky rocketing health care have certainly called US Congressman Jim Marshall to take action.

Marshall said, "As a result we're kind of worried that it's going to become more and more difficult for facilities like this to provide treatment to people in need."

At the DaVita Dialysis Center, Patients lied on the beds watching television, coping with the hardship of receiving critical kidney treatment.

One patient describes the treatment as "Mentally and physically straining."

One startling fact is that African Americans constitute about thirty two percent of the diabetes cases in the nation, while only making up about 15 percent of the population.

Marshall's visit symbolized hope to many whom dealt with the hardship of receiving treatment, but he says it's more than just his job that brought him to deal with this growing issue. He said some years back, he lost a personal friend to kidney disease.
