Title: Need help - Anyone have a new IMAC with OS X?
Post by: Black on December 20, 2007, 11:30:47 PM
Mike's mom bought us a new IMAC for Christmas.  I LOVE Macs and have hated using our old HP and Toshiba laptops.  But, this new one has so much stuff that was not on our old Mac back in the '90s that I don't know how to use, or so far have not found a use for, and apparently there is no word processing software in it.  I find it hard to believe they would load all of this software and not give me any kind of word processing software. ???  Maybe she didn't request it so it didn't get put in?  I wish I could have picked out the one I wanted but I can't complain since it's a gift!  And it is really cool.  It's an IMAC 20" 2.0GZ 1GB/250/SD/2400, totally wireless, even the keyboard and the mouse - nothing on it but a power cord.  I need some help.  Anyone here good with the new IMACs?

The specifics are:

How do I find out for sure whether there is word processing software already installed?  If it doesn't have it, what would you recommend?

How do I enlarge the type on my screen?

On the right of every post on IHD, if it is more than a line or two long, I get a scroll button and I can't read the whole post without using that tiny &^%$ scroll button.  How do I get rid of that &^%* thing?

How do I make the aol icon stay in the tool bar on the desk top?

I downloaded aol and only got the favorite places from one screen name.  How do I get the favorite places for the other screen name?  (I really need the other one because it has all of my business stuff on it.  I've been going back to the old laptop when I need a web address.)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a mac - with OS X but not sure I can help you. I had macs for years and they were always so easy - this one is a real pain in the ass. I had to have my hubby help me with all those things. Sorry, maybe you'll have better luck than me!

Have no answer, but I am curious...I just saw a commercial on the television, Mac says they give free lessons with their newest machines, is this not true?

Thank you so much for the offer.  :2thumbsup;  I have no idea what the time difference is between here and there.  ???   Pick a day and local time convenient for you and I'll figure out what time that is here, and meet you then.

The absolute newest word processor is called Pages, the spreadsheet program is called Numbers and the presentation program (like PC's PowerPoint) is called Keynote. I know, creative names, aren't they? I don't know if those versions came on yours or not, but the bare bones word processor that always comes with a Mac is called TextEdit. Try searching for any of them in the Applications file.

How do I make the aol icon stay in the tool bar on the desk top?

Are you referring to the Dock, located at the bottom of the desktop? If so, open the folder containing the AOL icon, and drag the icon into the Dock and relaese the mouse. It will stay put.

That's all I can answer right now without sitting in front of a Mac. Hope it helps somewhat.

Thanks, bear.  I downloaded a 30 day preview and I hate it!  Pages is about 70% of the "word" software I have on my old Mac from the late '90s.  I found TextEdit :thx; but it's about 5%.  I hate it when the new stuff is a downgrade.

I'm working on a piece now and I want to rotate it so that it goes from one column in "letter", to "landscape" with two columns.  My old Mac will do that, this new one won't!!  I'm going to try cutting it out of the letter and see if I can paste it into two columns in a new landscape.

Yeah, I meant the Dock.  I dragged the aol there and it stayed!  :thx;  The Safari on the new one is great, but aol has my addresses and favorite places, so I still need it.  Only bad thing is when I switch from Safari to aol and back, I have to log in to IHD again every time.

Anyone know anything about BootCamp?
