HI Friends,
Well, today Dustin had dialysis. He got the NEW NURSE well when she disconnected him I guess she pulled his PERMCATH TUBE OUT like 6inches!!!!!!!! Dustin said "Mom I freaked out". I guess he yelled at her and said oh my God look what you did. I guess Dustin gave her and a--
chewing. Now give me a break she should have known how to handle this permcath. I was not a happy camper. Ya know when Momma aint happy nobody is happy. I restrained myself from calling where he goes. We will have to wait until Thursday to see if it still works!!!!!!!! Yeah I know people make mistakes but DUH!!!!! this is not a scrapped knee we are talking about. Dustin is really sore he pushed the tube back in. I just pray it still works!!!!!!

I am not sure but trust me I know Dustin prbly said some really bad words today!!!! He has been lucky with his permcath. Has not had any trouble with it whatsoever. Now,,,, on the other hand I will go marching in their if Thursday it doesnt work!!! They will see what a MEAN MOM I can be lol!!!

I would call if it were me and say, "Is this person familiar with Permacaths? We would like to be sure she's instructed on proper usage. Please mark his chart that she is not to put him on again, nor is anyone else who is inexperienced."

how new is the cath, it might need to be looked at by the Docter. I am with Kitktaz and Okarol, if a tech or nurse messes up with me they are out of my pod while I am there...Boxman

Dustin has had the permacath since March of this year. No trouble whatsoever. Now the poor kid has a bad headache and is stressed over this!!! I think Dustin said a Dr will be their this Thursday. Think I will have him talk to him so he can check it.

Hoooo-leeee crap cockies! That is ridiculous. "Duuuuh, I thought I was supposed to YANK THE LINES TO DISCONNECT THEM" That nurse deserves multiple ass rippings after that. I hope Dustin's catheter is ok.

What a scary moment that must have been. I would have probably had a similar reaction and lost my mind on the person, I mean that is my lifeline, don't make any mistakes! Oh yea, I should mention that I also have a perm-cath, it is actually my second one. It has always been a good access for me with good flow and "suprisingly" good clearence. The forst one had to be replaced due to a hairline fracture in the red hub. IF Dustin needs to have it replaced or repositioned it (the procedure) is really no big deal. Total procedure takes about 10, 15 minutes tops.

"They used a guide wire to reinsert. The procedure took about 10 minutes. I was talking to an assistant about motorcycles while it was being replaced which was a nice distraction. The following day I spent at the race track riding my bike to my limits without even a thought of the cathater. Also, I think because of the guide wire they got better placement because it has a better flow."

It's sad but with all things routine (meaning routine to the medical personnel) they are just making repetitive motions. Not entirely thinking about what their actions might result in. Just like the patients that get the wrong medication, wrong things cut off at the hospital, etc. They are sometimes just going through the motions.
I think a formal complaint is best. Maybe retraining not only for the nurse that made the mistake, but for all the nurses at the facility. It's good to get a little refresher now and then.
Hopefully Dustin is able to not stress about it anymore. Unfortunately, what is done is done. All we can do now is pray that it works. And we are doing that for you!

In most cases a permcath is sutured internally with a flange attached to the catheter for that purpose. Pulling that flange through the skin would cause extreme pane. If in fact the catheter was pulled out and he pushed it back in, the chance of infection is astronomical and the placement is at best questionable. You and Dustin not having the catheter checked immediately is beyond my comprehension.

Man. That nurse is lucky she wasn't thrown a punch. Something like that had to have HURT!!! Silly woman. I swear. UNLESS you have been trained on it, NOBODY should be allowed to touch us unless they know what they are DOING. Grrr... Let us know how it goes Thursday!!!

One of the patients in our unit, a very outspoken man, never allows anyone new near him. It doesn't matter if they came from a dialysis unit in another country with decades of experience. They have to work for a while in our unit before he allows them to touch him.
The only problem is, this means he is favoured, and the rest of us are the guinea-pigs!

I called the dialysis unit and spoke to the Manager. As for the comment why we did not have it checked well these people are suppose to be trained and qualified I would have thought they would say "Gee maybe we should call teh Dr's and tell them what happened and what he wants done. Dustin is on his way Fresenuis to see his Dr. I will let you all know what he says. And by the way to the comment about why we didnt do anything give me a break Im one of the BEST PARENTS anyone can be!!!!! I dont need a preaching too thank you!

Hello All,
Dustin is at the hospital getting his permacath rerouted. George, as you said they told him they will cut him in a different place and use a guide wire. Geesh poor kid. And can you believe that nurse did not even say Im sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made it known that Dustin does not ever want her touching him ever again!!!!!

Lori, I live in Indiana too. Where in Indiana do you live, and what centre does Dustin go to? I live in Indianapolis, and originally went to a DSI centre that used to be owned by Fresenius, and now I do home hemo through a Davita centre. My grandmother goes to a Fresenius centre in Danville. If for some reason either me or my grandmother has to dialyze at Dustin's centre, we would look after your son and avoid that particular nurse. You and Dustin will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

This is a classic...I was in for my monthly visit to the center for my assessement and to get my iron injection. They use a butterfly needle into my fistula...it's a little thing and not a big deal, but the new home hemo nurse missed and infiltrated and my arm started bubbling up. My wife saw it, told the nurse to back it out and we started all over. She restuck me, realized she didn't know where my fistula was, backed off, and told my wife to do it (she places my needes for dialysis every day). She jumped up, snapped on some gloves and was able to get the stick...my fistula is kind of deep, so that little needle was standing straight up and down...the nurse was amazed how strong the thrill felt for such a deep fistula.
My wife ROCKS!!!
