Since I just had my transplant on Nov. 29th, I thought I'd share my story with you.
For 6 years, my creatinine level held steady around 3.3. This past June, it jumped up to 7.2 and my nephrologist said I needed to start looking for a donor. My sister-in-law was the first to be tested and she was a match. However, less than 24 hours from our scheduled surgery, the doctors cancelled the surgery, due to my SIL's high blood pressure. This was on September 19th. Then, my sister's friend/co-worker offered to be tested. Within a month, she was approved to be my donor.
Our surgeries went really well and we were both up and walking around the next day. My donor was just discharged this afternoon at noon. I am hoping to be discharged tomorrow. My creatinine level is now at 1.0 and all other test results look great! My doctors said I got an awesome kidney and it started working right away.
I was asked by my transplant center to be a part of a new drug therapy study (it's in phase III with Bristol-Meyer Squibb). So, I am not on Prograf, Prednisone, or Cellcept. They are hoping to have the new drugs FDA approved within 2 years. So far, things are going well, but it's still very new for me.

Congratulations on your transplant. You will find much information on this site and wonderful advise. Can I ask where did you have your transplant? My husband Len had his at Washington Hospital Center on Sept 7th and I believe that the transplant surgeon, Dr. Light is involved in the trial you are speaking of. My husband is only on 1 mg prograf twice a day, but has had 2 infusions of Zanapax and is suppose to have another this coming Thursday. There are so many new treatments and drugs that it is impossible to keep up.

Are you involved with the Phase III trial of Belatacept (LEA29Y) by any chance? If so, what facility did you have your txp. at?

Yes, that's the trial. I'm doing it at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. I get my first round of Belatacept on Monday. I'm also on thymoglobulin and sirolimus.

Great story! So glad you were able to get it rescheduled so quickly.
I've never heard of the trial med your on, nor one of the others you mentioned, but I am on the Rapamune.
Anyways, look forward to hearing more from you and I hope your discharged soon and home! :grouphug;

Great story! I hope the new medication works and thanks for being part of the trial...those of us who will come after you and take advantage of better meds appreciate it!!

I was discharged this afternoon and it feels so good to be at home. However, I ended up leaving the hospital with a fractured foot! I had broken the same bone a few years ago and was told the fracture may not completely heal. I remember waking up one morning with my foot pressed really hard against the end of my bed and it gradually started to hurt, swell, and throb (it was almost more painful than my huge incision!). There's not much I can do about it except to stay off my foot for awhile...which I'll be doing anyway during my recovery.
