Post by: glitter on November 29, 2007, 09:34:50 PM

 :ausflag;  Yep I LOVE it. I don't know an Aussie that doesn't.  :urcrazy;

It's a spread that is in everyones pantry. Its one of the first foods my kids ate... Vegemite on toast.... they use to suck it to death.   :2thumbsup;

Butter the toast or bread.... then spread the vegemite THINLY over the butter. You only need a little. mmmmmmmmmmm    :bandance;

I went to the site to earlier today and couldn't find an ingriedent listing to try to come up with what it might taste like. All I found was that is is brewers yeast baste. There's gotta be more than that for ingriedents right? Well when I do the Christmas secret Santa next year and get someone from Aussie, send me some of this Vegemite, I'm curious to know what it taste like.

If you tasted it Chris I am sure you would think we are all ...   :urcrazy; :urcrazy;

It is savoury and kind of salty.... oh its too hard to describe.

Yeah you just can't describe that awesome vegemite taste... but it definitely is one of those things I think you grow up with (down here) and love... and foreigners.. just think it's disgusting.

I remember on a late night talk show many moons ago they gave some to a visiting US movie star to taste... gosh who was it... it was one of those guys infamous for something but his name excapes me. Anyway he took a taste and spat it out saying "this tastes like s**t!!!" it was the funniest thing out.

Put me down as a vegemite eating nerd boy!

My husband brought a jar of it back from Australia when he did a job there several years ago. He still has it! If it's still good, and I work up the nerve, I'll try it and give you my input!   ;D

You can get it at World Market, if you have one near you here in the US.  I've been tempted to try it but I just can't get past the color!

Never mind. I won't be trying ours. It expired 7 years ago!!

Ingredients: Yeast extract, salt, mineral salt (508, 509), malt extract, natural colour (150), vegetable extract, thamine, riboflavin, niacin.

Thanks, but I think I'll stick to my vitamins!

Ah Vegemite - a staple of the Australian diet.

Anyone with a British background might be familiar with Marmite?? It's very similar to that, but much nicer.

If you're not used to it, it would probably just taste salty. Take Wattle's advice and spread it THINLY. Thick vegemite is pretty horrid.

Billy Connolly was once telling a story about how he was eating Vegemite on toast in his hotel room whilst touring Australia. He was sitting on his bed eating and he dropped the toast - face down - on the bed. So there's this brown stain on his sheets, and he tried to rub it clean which obviously just made it worse  :rofl; Apparently there was somewhat of stunned reaction from a hotel employee who entered the room and caught sight of it - well you know what the employee must have THOUGHT, don't you?  :rofl;

After seeing the ingredients I'd say an expiration date is a good thing because you probably couldn't tell from the taste if it had gone bad.  ;D

Maybe it's like caviar, an acquired taste.  :P

I think expiration dates are there for legal purposes only. I doubt Vegemite would go off, at least not for years and years!

As long as it didn't taste like fish or any other water living food, I'd be willing to try it. Besides toast, what else is it used for?

Not much else apart from toast or sandwiches. It's also nice on crispbread, or Vita Wheats or Salads or other savoury biscuits that are intended to have toppings.

I've tried and found it to be one of the most vile and disgusting things I've ever put into my mouth. Not to long ago I discovered it is an amazing catfish bait and have gone through many bottles since then and landed many nice cats

I agree that if you grow up with either marmite or vegemite you love the taste if you haven't .....yuck.   (I love chicken feet and tripe for the same reason...childhood and used to it.)  Vegemite is super salty though if I remember correctly...that's what would worry me.

As an Aussie, I find most people that try it just try way too much. I use it on toast and use a skim of it just a scraping. Maybe you have been trying to "supersize" it which it definitely doesn't need.

Supersize us! More is always better.

Title: Re: Vegemite

Sometimes I just love spreading it on thick but definitely if you were trying it for the first time I would recommend just a light scraping as the lovely tamara suggests.. because it is such a strong taste you only need a bit to get that.. if you put on too much it can totally overpower you and I wouldn't recommend that at all.

Hey wait... they have vanilla pepsi??? not here they don't :(

They call it the "Not-so-vanilla Vanilla" Pepsi http://www.pepsivanilla.com/home.php - I haven't tried it.
Off topic but just wanted to mention - my nutritionist said to get the Greek Style unflavored yogurt at Trader Joe's (do you have them there?) and add a couple of drops of vanilla extract - she says it is the most delicious taste and consistency and a really healthy treat.

What's Greek Style Yogurt?
Trader Joe's we have 23 miles away, so if I have something to do in that area, I'll go. Just not making a special trip due to gas prices.

I do know Marmite from my youth, but it was never a favourite of mine.  It is one of those things they made you eat = "It's good for you!"

My dad used to say that whenever he heard the word 'wholesome', it meant that it tasted badly.  His mother used to say "Eat it, it is wholesome"

I have a friend in Australia, she sent me a large box of goodies including Vegemite, it was awful, probably the worst thing I ever tasted, but also in the box was a candy bar called Cherry Ripe & THAT was to die for. It's chocolate covered cherry flavored coconut. I could eat one every day of my life.

Why oh why don't we have them in the USA.

I checked the website.  They do not ship stateside yet.   MMMMMMMMMMM!  Sorry drooling!

I do believe we did, or may still have something like that. The last time I saw something like that was when I ordered a bunch of chocolate online from www.hometownfavorites.com
I haven't been to the site in awhile to order anything, bu thinking I should now that I am thinking of it.

The green color of Vegemite and where it comes from reminds of sea kelp. I tried kelp once and only once and that was enough for me However this isn't made of kelp, but so far I am reading it has a salty taste, which I would hate. I'm not a salt loving type person and that is partly why I am staying away from trying it. To bad they don't have them in the ketchup/mustard/relish packets for easier tasting purposes. Like a sample packet.
