Title: Hello! Newbie here!
Post by: SheilaW on November 16, 2007, 08:03:14 PM
I just stumbled on this forum today, and I'm glad I did.

I'm a 33 year old wife and mother of 2 wonderful kids. I'm also a dialysis patient who hopes to receive the wonderful gift of a new kidney one day.

I learned when I was 22 years old that I had Bergers Disease which would likely one day result in kidney failure. That day came on August 4th this year. I went to the ER because I was just so physically ill and couldn't get over it. They told me there that my cretnium (sp?) was at a 9. They took a second blood draw, only to find the same number. I was sent to a hospital that could take care of me. When I was there, I received a neck cathetar so I could receive dialysis quickly. I was given some information and was told that I would have to decide on peri or hemo dialysis. Upon reading the information, talking to my doctor, looking deep inside myself, and talking to my husband, I decided on hemodialysis. The next day I had a better central line placed and a fistula done in my left arm.

I left the hospital on the 9th of August with an entirely new outlook on life and the directions to the dialysis center 50 miles from my home. Since then I've gone every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday. I've met some wonderful people there, and I am truly glad they are a part of my life now. Since August, I've had little to no appetite. My challenge before I can get on the transplant list is to lose weight. A lot of it. I've lost a little over 50 lbs since then, which is great, but there is more to go. My doctor told me last month that if I continue to lose weight in the month we're currently in, that he will refer me this month. I will know the Tuesday after Thanksgiving if it's going to happen.

Through it all, I've tried to keep a good outlook. I try to stay positive. My nurses at the dialysis center are impressed with my attitude towards it. But why be negative or bitter? Life is far too short and fragile with too many uncertanties to not try to make the best of it.

I look forward to meeting you on this site and learning about what's in my future.

Thank you for this resource.

Hey Sheila,

 :waving; HI and  :welcomesign;

Well I'm another 33 year old and my kidney failure happened when I was 25. I also had the weight problem of getting on the list, had to lose 25 kilos (approx 55 pounds) before that would and did happen. Well I started going to the gym and eat better, and hey my transplant happened from my beautiful man 4 weeks ago this Tuesday!  :clap;

So keep being good, you will get there, just keep positive and keep doing a lil bit each week, you will get there !

One thing I learnt from my ol boss, you can have your bad days in the week of being slack and eating bad, just make sure you have more good days  ;)

Take Care Tamara xxxx oooo  :cuddle;  :beer1;  :grouphug;

Welcome to our community!  We are always so happy when someone 'stumbles' on us and decides to join.  I am sure you will not regret this step. I like your attitude and that is going to take you very far when dealing with this renal challenge.  Well, here you have another caring and sharing family in IHD.  This site totally exceeded my expectations, as many will tell you.  We are very grateful for a place like this where we are free to vent (and rage, when we need to) and know that there are people who really understand what we are going through.  So please take advantage of all this site has to offer - read all you can, and post all you can.  :grouphug;
