Restless Legs Syndrome Risk Factors Identified

SAN FRANCISCO —High serum phosphorus is among the risk factors that may contribute to restless legs syndrome (RLS) in hemodialysis (HD) patients, a study shows.

Researchers based the finding on a study of 6,209 HD patients from 274 facilities participating in the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns study.

Overall, 27% of subjects had evidence of RLS. Patients with a serum phosphorus level above 6.4 mg/dL had a 22% higher risk of RLS than those with a level of 4.3-5.2 mg/dL (the reference range). RLS was associated with poorer health-related quality of life and higher risk of depression.

Findings were presented here during Renal Week 2007, an annual meeting convened by the American Society of Nephrology.
