For the past week I've had this "sweet" like taste in my mouth. It must be really bad in the morning because my dogs are sniffing at my mouth!! I brush my teeth and it is back in about an hour. I did chip a tooth last week and the dentist just filed it off. None of my teeth hurt. Any ideas??
EDITED: Merged with later topic of same name and Thread moved to "General Discussion" as it is dialysis-related - Bajanne, Moderator

How is your blood sugar? The higher it is, the sweeter your breath smells.
-
I have been getting a tinny, terrible taste in the back of my mouth lately. It happens in the afternoons mostly after lunch. Maybe we are just weird.
-
I think I remember a thread someone started about having
a sweet taste in the mouth. I may be wrong but seems like
it was Amber maybe. It was awhile back. I have a sweet taste but I
always figured it was because of being diabetic. Does seem to be
worse tho since I've been on dialysis tho sugar is under very good control.
-
CRAP! All I need is to be diabetic now! Oh, well you guys seem to handle it! Sorry for whining!
>:(
-
By all means, whine, rerun! None of us who has diabetes would wish it on anyone else. But get your sugar checked, just in case.
-
Rerun it is a symptom of diabetes.
-
Want to borrow my big stick to go pound on something? ;D

At times I used to get this. In my case it was because I was eating too many carbs and not taking in enough protein.

It might be thrush.
Uncontrolled overgrowth of Candida in the mouth may be caused by factors that reduce the natural resistance, such as illness, stress, long-term use of corticosteroids or medications that suppress the immune system, and immune disorders such as (AIDS).
It may also be caused by conditions that upset the balance of normal microorganisms in the mouth. This is most commonly associated with use of antibiotics, but it may also occur with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and with the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy or the use of birth control pills.
Oral thrush is most common in infants and toddlers, in the elderly, and in people who are debilitated or whose immune system has been suppressed by disease or medical treatments.
The goal of treatment is to control the growth of Candida. Antifungal medications (such as nystatin, clotrimazole, and miconazole) are given for 5 to 10 days. They are administered in the mouth (swallowing the medicine after "swishing" it around).
A single-dose oral medicine called Diflucan is available if these treatments do not work. Underlying conditions/disorders should be identified and treated.

Thank you people. I'll mention it to my doc the next time she flies by and try and get this figured out.
-
Rerun it is a symptom of diabetes.
:o Damn, straight to the point.
-
Usually when the sweet taste is noticable to animals or others it is diabetes and possibly acidosis.
-
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Frequent urination or frequent thirst for a day or more No urination no more thirsty than normal
Fatigue Yes
Nausea and vomiting No
Muscular stiffness or aching Yes
Mental stupor that may progress to coma ?
Rapid breathing No
Fruity breath (breath odor) Yes
I'll call my Nephrologist in the morning. Thanks Sluff.

Be careful, a lot of those symptoms are symptons from being on dialysis.
-
They are going to do a glucose test tomorrow at dialysis. I feel alright....aside from the bad taste, mussle stiffness, ....
. :banghead;

You may not notice the thirstiness because you are probably used to being thirsty anyways. I hope it's not anything too serious.
Guess we will find out later today. Good Luck.

Rerun, did they run that glucose test on you? :popcorn;
-
They ran it after I had eaten a pop tart and a NePro drink and it was 150. They said that was fine. ??
I've got other symptoms going on like stiff mussels and joint pain and tingling and numbness in my fingers. Like when I'm typing or driving.
I don't know what this taste is. It suck not living around family where I could ask someone to smell my breath!! :P
-
150 is not bad after just eating a poptartand drink.
That's good that it's not diabetes.

I'm very relieved. But this taste has to be coming from somewhere. I'm almost use to it now! :banghead;
-
But the #150 is out of the normal range, i think the highest they like it to be is 110 or 115, at least that is what i remember from when i was first diagnosed. 150 isnt high to someone who has diabetes already but i think it would be considered borderline for someone who has never been diagnosed, just talk to the doctor to make sure Rerun. better to be safe than sorry :P
-
Thats like this smell, that only I smell, is so strong sometimes it almost burns my nose.
Goofynina your right but I'm not sure if she just ate and drank it might be normal. Then again my normal is 360 after fasting so I don't remember what normal is. They probably should have checked Rerun after an hour to see if it was below 115 by then.
-
A fasting blood sugar should be close to 100. 150 would be good after a sugary meal like pop tarts. Even a healthy person has a varied range of blood sugars as they digest their food.

Maybe you are just to sweet for your own good. Nah that's not it. >:D

Maybe you are just to sweet for your own good. Nah that's not it.
I thought of that, but you are right! :thx;
-
150 sounds normal if you had eaten. You needed an 8 hour fasting blood sugar, but considering it was just 150 after food it sounds OK.
How about acid-reflux, that can cause a sweet taste. Another thing that could cause it would be using Aspartane sweeteners.
-
I sometimes get that 'sweet' taste in my mouth , i do CAPD and was told by the hospital that it was the dialysis fluid being absorbed back into my body !
-

Is that a clinical diagnosis? :rofl;
-
No, the clinical diagnosis will tell her it is all in her head! Imagine that!
-
Thats what my family thinks about all my symptoms. My wife just this morning I was telling her how I was feeling and she just says yep and started talking about something more important. Maybe I complain too much and she's tired of hearing it I guess.
Rerun did you ever figure it out?
-
Here's something I talked about in another thread. For me, artificial sweeteners, particularly acesulfame potassium and sucralose (Splenda®) give me a sweet taste in my mouth from my saliva that just doesn't go away until after one or two dialysis treatments. You should check to see if these are in your foods. Also, I sometimes get a sweet taste in my mouth that doesn't go away from aspartame (NutraSweet, the blue packets) and saccharin (Sweet 'n Low, the pink packets).
Acesulfame potassium and sucralose are NOT metabolized, so there is a good chance that in dialysis patients, they simply stay in the blood stream until they are dialyzed out. I don't have any research on this though, it's just from personal experience.
I avoid ALL artificial sweeteners.

HI Rerun,
Know this is an old thread but I have the same sweet taste and it has turned out to be zero-sugar drinks I have been drinking. I am no diabetic and that is what I was told it is that causes it.
-
I am having a situation that is a little strange. I remember someone talking about it before in this forum, but I have been unable to find the topic, even though I searched for it.
I am having this sweet taste in my mouth even if I haven't drunk anything sweet. It happened some time before but stopped. Now it has started again. I wonder what causes this. Does anyone else have that experience? What should I do about it? (Washing my mouth out with water does not help; it just comes back)
-
Yes the sweet taste is a common thing ! I do CAPD and i was told that it is the dialysis fluid i can taste! Not sure if Hemo folk get it ? or what it could be if they do. Not really a lot you can do about it , it does come and go for a few days , without explanation.
-
Hubby is on hemo and sometimes gets a salty taste if given extra saline.
