Title: Wizard of Oz.
Post by: Romona on November 11, 2007, 05:08:26 PM
My daughter is watching the Wizard of Oz. I remember my mom gathering us into the livingroom to watch this classic movie. I really didn't like the flying monkeys. I tried to pretend I liked the movie (it seemed so important to my mom). The monkeys don't seem so scary now. The special effects are not like they are now. It always seemed to be on around the holidays. Is there a movie that is a special classic for you? I like "It's a Wonderful Life". It puts me in a holiday mood.  :)

It is one of my favorite movies decades after I saw it for the first time.  When I was a kid "The Wizard of Oz" was shown just once a year and it was always on CBS.  What really made it stand out was that for many years it was the only color program that would be on CBS all year.  The color in that movie is gorgeous.  The poor actors though were sweating under intense lighting that would literally melt the makeup off of them.

Very slow film stock and slow optics in the few technicolor cameras that existed then required enormous amounts of light. There is alot of trivia and lore around about the making of that movie.  One bit I remember was that the producers were at a loss about what to do about the yellow brick road.  They solved that problem by visiting the local hardware store and buying a ton of yellow paint.

There are also a number of scenes that were cut from the original movie to reduce the running time.  The DVD version of the movie has some of those scenes in their entirety and where footage doesn't exist still shots are used with the original soundtrack.

I love all the movies that come on during the holidays EVERY year... such as Wizard of Oz, Rudolph, and the Grinch....

Another thing about the Wizard of Oz... a guy hung himself in the background during the scene where there on the edge of the yellow brick road and the forest and right before the wicked witch comes on top of that lil house and throws fire at the scarecrow... I believe its cut out of the edited versions now, I have the one with it tho... interesting.

Wizard of Oz--my Mom would have us all watch it together and she always made a batch of fudge.  Amazing how strong childhood memories are.   It Is A Wonderful Life--must watch it several times during the holidays.  And Chevy Chase in, oh shoot, what is the name? With all the Christmas lights on the house, tree catches on fire, relatives over for Christmas??  Reminds me of some of my relatives during the holidays!  Where is AlohaBeth when I need her memory? :rofl;

My son saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time last night.  I didn't know if he would like it since it was an old movie, but he really did.  It was nice to see him enjoying it.

Has anyone tried watching the beginning of Oz, volume turned down on tv and listening to the entire Dark Side of The Moon cd?  It's weird how it just goes together.

I love all the caroon classics, especially Frosty The Snoman

Nina, nothing wrong with the new version of Grinch, just like my classics, I guess!!! I had heard that about The Wizard of Oz. Apparently there are lyrics in there that mimic the movie, too!

I loved Wizard of Oz as a child but I used to have nightmares about the Wicked Witch of the West. That laugh used to scare the s**t out of me!

Every single year I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart.  He's one of my favorite actors of all time and I always think back to my worst days on Dialysis when he's at the bar wondering if he should take his life.  And the massive amount of elation he feels when he gets his life back, I've been there too.

Such a great film on so many levels.  When it was originally released critics were mixed.  Today, thankfully, it's considered a classic.

A Christmas Story absolutely!!

My son saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time the other night. I didn't think he'd like it, but at 9:30 when we still had 45 minutes left, I was begging him to let us go to bed, and he wouldn't go until the movie was over. I guess he liked it!

From many sites I have seen and interviews with people that were there this is simply a rumour.  Go to www.snopes.com/movies/films/ozsuicide.asp (http://www.snopes.com/movies/films/ozsuicide.asp) .  If you scroll down there is even some commentary you can listen to.

My two favorites are A Christmas Story, I love the 24 hours on Christmas Eve and I especially love The Little Drummer Boy. Except they hardly ever show that on TV anymore.

if disney had made a movie the way baum had written the book, everyone would have had nightmares. compared to the book, the 1939 movie is all lightness and fluff.

The Wizard of Oz is a classic...was for me and my kids. Has anyone seen the play "Wicked"? I saw it this summer - a great new perspective twist on the classic version!

As far as Christmas movies, I'm like Angela...I love them all! Faves: It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Love Actually (a newer favorite).

Beth saw it on Broadway a couple of years ago with Christine Chinewith (sp?). She is now on Pushing Daisies.  Beth was taking classes and doing workshops and had the chance to work with Christine's vocal coach.  She absolutely loved the show.   For those who don't know, it is pre-Wizard of Oz, when the two sisters were still getting along.  This year for Halloween  Beth and her sister, Melissa dressed as Gelinda and Alphaba. I will try to remember to post pictures--they looked good.

How about all those claymtion or whatever shows--like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town?  My hubby bought ALL of those for our son last year and wouldn't you know it, he refused to watch them!  UGH!  I think we'll drag them out this year and see what happens....

.

wicked was FANTASTIC. my daughter and i went to see it. although before we went i couldn't figure out how they had made a musical out of that book, it's as dark as the baum oz series.

It is dark and like you said, so is Wizard of Oz.

Everyone's posts have made me start gathering my holiday tapes, dvd's and cd's.  I want to enjoy a loooonnnnggggg holiday season this year. It will be the first year that all my kids and families will not be together at Christmas and I don't want to get depressed or anything stupid.  I am going to bake, cook, watch shows, and  have a great time enjoying everything.  This was a good thread. :thumbup;

Wicked :)  Like mom said -- Melissa was Galinda and I was Elphaba (the wicked witch)  for halloween -- I will post pics this weekend -- it's on the camera with Vegas and we all see how slow I am about that!!!

I did get to see the original Broadway Cast of Wicked -- With Kristen, Joel Grey, Eden Espinosa (ufortunatly Idina Menzel was out that day)  so it was really incredible!  It was actually Joel Greys final performance (although no one knew it at the time)  the next week he called out for a bad cold which turned out to be pnemonia and he never came back  :(

The book Wicked and the musical Wicked you just kind of have to take on seperate levels -- the musical is so much different and fluffier - I love the book too and read that before I saw the show.

I like those Christmas shows better, but for the last couple of years I have been burnt out on watching any Christmas show and do not know why. I like what Robot Chicken did with spoofing some of the Christmas claymation shows, but I'm a Seth Green fan of his comedy.

I put those on for my kids every year (as I grew up watching them and still love them), but due to all the new disney movies and such they first thought they were weird.  :lol; My daugher loves them though now.

Trying to do this at home can be kinda tricky since you may have to start and stop the music depending on the version of the movie you have.  the House Of Blues in Chicago shows this every year (Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side of The Moon) along with a laser light show and call it the "Dark Side Of Oz".

I was lucky enough to see them in 1994 in Chicago during their Pulse tour.  Roger Waters wasn't part of the show but it was still kick @**.

AlohaBeth is my theater girl.  She's been doing shows for years,; acting, directing, teach makeup or staging.  She loves it all.  Before going to Hawaii, she was the director of Act for Youth. It is a program for teenagers offering classes and doing productions. She loved it and one of her students is now in LA and keeps calling her for more advice.

Nana's angels---all seven of them.  I had a sleepover Halloween party for them, so the parents could have a night out.  Please remind me next year that I should have just the party and send them home at bedtime!  Most did good, but the little ones were a bit restless (as in, can I sleep with you Nana?)  But, I want to fill them with memories of me so they will always remember how much I love them.

And Pink Floyd, my sons won a radio contest for making the best banner (The Wall logo on a full size sheet) and were upgraded to the front row.  They were two happy teenage boys!
