Title: Deodorants!
Post by: kitkatz on May 23, 2006, 09:03:02 PM
Have you read the warnings on the back of deodorant bottles and cans.
There is a warning to check with your doctor before using them if you have kidney disease!
Are we unaware of these products that may potentially harm us? Oh my God!   Please check your bottle immediately.  Go to an organic deodorant.  Suggestions are available on line.   I am going to check with my doc at dialysis tomorrow.  My biomedical engineering student daughter says it maybe the aluminum in it. The human body does not know what to do with aluminum.

yeah antiperspirant has aluminum in it, and a lot of phosphate binders are aluminum based (ex. Alucaps [which is aluminum hydroxide]) and therefore people who take this type of phosphate binder would have elevated levels of aluminum (aluminum has toxic effects that cause bone disease and damage the nervous system). So I think the extra aluminum (or aluminium for you Kevno  ;) ) could be harmful to a kidney patient (taking those type of binders)

The excess aluminum goes to you brain and gets stuck there.  :o Which is why they banned doctors from using Basagel to control Phosphorus. It worked REALLY well to control PH but if left to much aluminum in your brain. The funny thing is Basagel was a OTC (over the counter) medicine, but it was mainly an antacid for occasional use, however back in the day doctors were prescribing it long term which was later discovered to be a big no-no.  ::)

The sad part is I was on Basagel for about 5 years straight.  :-\ until they outlawed it.  >:(

I asked Joe's doctor about it quite a while ago, and I forget the explanation, but he said we shouldn't worry about it.

Yeah it's such a miniscule amount it won't harm even a dialysis patient.
