Title: Can't SLEEP!!
Post by: Rerun on May 16, 2006, 03:22:03 AM
It is almost 3:30 AM and I have not slept a wink!  I'm fidgety all over.  My legs, arms, hands, feet!!!  I HATE this.  I took a sleeprelief pill and a 2mg of Valium!  Nothing!  I want to sleep but can't.  HELP!

I can totally relate to that Rerun...  I haven't had a decent sleep since I started dialysis..
I sleep maybe 1 or 2 hours at nite then just toss and turn the rest of the night... sleep aids don't work for me either...  >:(    I don't know what to do anymore...  so tired during the day...
Maybe a nice BIG glass of warm milk??  haha...  not likely...  ;)

Oh shucks. My post was one that was lost. Oh well... I sleep like a rock most days. However I think work takes it out of me more than usual. When I am off of work I tend to switch my days and nights around. Can't sleep at night, try to sleep all day. Hate that!  Have to stop watching stupid stuff on TV and DVD.
Suggestions:
     Get the Sandman to clobber you with a two by four.
No...seriously.... Find ways to relax before bedtime.  Chamomile tea is nice.

rerun, I never sleep for more then a few hours at a time it is frustrating to say the least i just lay there and stare at the tv or celling!  If you find away to resolve this let me know.. I take xanax and restril and still max of 3 hour of sleep.  I am always tired and very irritable I would hate to be around me!  I understand how you feel

Since I was put on meds for my feet pain, I sleep quite well most nights. I have found it helps me with deep sleeping, and my restless legs have reduced drastically. I dont know if this is just this med, or if its the nocturnal as well.

OMG can you imagine two dialysis patients who are married?  One would be up and the other would be asleep and then wake up due to tossing and turning and then they would both be up!

I am up and down all night and don't want anyone making any noise to disturb any "chance" of sleep!

I slept all night on Wednesday Night.   ;D  A true gift from GOD.  Sleep deprivation has got to be the worst torture one can endure.

Joe's been having trouble with this also.  Constantly tossing and turning, moving from room to room, complaining it's too hot.  Maybe we'll try to get a sleep aid from his nephro.  Couldn't hurt.

My hubby had the same problem several years ago. Restless legs were driving him crazy. The Nephro put him on some meds (i call his Nephro Dr. Feelgood, the guy is an angel) and now hubby sleeps through the night.

I spent the weekend in Puerto Rico.  The first two nights I slept like a baby, but for some unknown reason the third night, Sunday night, was nightmarish. I was sleeping for only about 10 to 20 minutes at a time.  Everytime I looked at the clock, it had hardly moved.  And when I did sleep, nonsensical things were going over and over in my mind - like the grade I had given a student. I was so happy when morning came.

I am alright in my own bed, dont get cold at all, but when Im on the machine I get cold. Good thing the kitty was with me, keeping half my leg warm lol

Have you tried increasing the temperature of the machine? When I get cold at dialysis I have them increase the temp of the machine.

The temp is already on 36, and the tech would have to come out and change it but I dont think you can go any higher than that. Ill just get another blanket.

I turn my machine down from 37 to 36. Both sorts of machines on the unit you can do this. F4008 and the Gambol AK200

Im on the AK95.Temp for nocturnal is 36 and in centre is usually 35. I know you can change the temp, but I dont really want too, because some nights I get too hot!! Id rather just rug up a bit more. I like the reduced temp in summer, it makes sleeping on the machine a bit of a treat, because you dont boil your a$$ off all night.

I have the same problem, I am in bed by 10 but wake up every day about 3. after a while I can't get back to sleep so I end up being the early bird. Funny though,I seem to have no problem sleeping during the day. I take no meds for sleep and do not know if they would work. :) :)

For the past 2 months now I have only sleep for 2 hr intervals. I stopped the RLS pills the Neph gave me and I have actually been able to sleep for 5 hrs a night just lately. Still can't get a full night's rest but the Neph thinks it is the legs jumping that wake me. He won't listen to me when I say they DO jump but they DON'T wake me. I don't know if I am allergic to the new RLS pills but I wake up itching all over and tossing and turning. Sleeping pills have not been able to help and the Neph refuses to give me anything to help me sleep. I do not know why. When I was taking the RLS pills that he put me on I was so tired all day long and not getting good sleep so I stopped it so I could work. I couldn't take them and work. Just couldn't..

there was a period in my life several years ago where i found i couldn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time, no matter what time of day or night it was. and it was several hours awake. i was still working then and it was terrible. slowly i got back to a more normal sleeping pattern.  now that i'm on dialysis that is happening again. i just don't fight it. if it's 3 am i get up use the computer, do a soduku or read til i can go back to sleep. i usually get up for the day around 7 to 9 am and many days take a one to two hour nap. even if i don't nap during the day i never sleep all night. i have thought about sleeping pills, the doctor has asked if i want them. but i couldn't take them on dialysis nights. i'd have to go to bed at 7pm, as i get up at 4am for dialysis. i've just given up.

Hubby sleeps like a baby some nights and other nights it is awful.  He is up roaming the house.  He had to stop nocturnal for a while because of lack of sleep.  He hooks up to the machine about 7 a.m now  for 3.5 hrs and as soon as he is hooked up he is snoring.  The past 2 nights he has been awake a lot which usually means I don't get a good sleep either.  He is fidgety, RLS, hungry - has go go have a snack, etc.  He has always been like this but he has always had kidney failure as well.

I've been trying over the counter sleeping pills but they don't work. I think my Doctor is getting tired of me asking for something everytime I see him but I need to get sleep. So next visit guess what? I'm asking for another script to knock my azz out.

I used to take benadryl to help me sleep, but now, it seems when i take it, i still dont get adequate sleep and i am so groggy and grumpy, the one thing that sometimes helps me when i normally wake up early i make myself go back to sleep, but now, i make myself stay awake and i dont nap during the day, yes, i still get grumpy but hey, as long as i am getting some sleep at night right?  :P  lol,  please have pity for those around me, those poor souls  ::)

Sleeping tablets can become a dialysis patients best friend.

I take them while on nocturnal every second night, don't need them the other night, only take them cause my life was getting to the stage I couldn't function.

I don't wake up after taking them feeling crappy, actually wake up feeling I have had a good nights sleep.

I had gotten to the point where I was waking every hour.  I wouldn't stay awake, just come awake, look at my watch, then go back to sleep again.  I didn't like it since I felt that somehow, it wasn't the best for my body.  But that seemed to have been a phase.  Since last week, I have been sleeping through until morning.  Sometimes I wake (like now), come out and read my emails, post on IHD, etc. and then return to bed and complete my night's sleep.  But I really feel better not waking every hour, as I was doing.

Four weeks ago I found out what RLS is like and boy did I find out. I've never experienced anything like this, I used to be able to sleep anywhere any time in fact if ever I was bored with nothing to do, I could sleep just to pass the time.  This has been an absolute nightmare (for reel) I hook up, get to bed, feel  real comforable for about half an hour, then, it starts and within another half an hour I'm doing an Irish Jig. This would last about four hours and then I'd eventually get to sleep. If I were to wake up I could still get back to sleep again no problem but it's just the initial getting off to sleep bit that takes forever.

After two weeks my GP prescribed Clonazapam which seemed to improve things but after about six nights I had to stop taking them because they made me feel sleepy in late afternoons and I have to drive to and from work. After another week of nocturnal dancing for Gt Britain my GP prescribed Zopiclone and ah.......Heaven. I've slept like a baby for the last two nights. I have to take them for a week and then gradually ween myself off them. Whether the problem will return once I stop taking them is anybody's guess but at the moment..mmmmmmm.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thank God for you guys ... I thought it was just me!  :beer1;

I took Temazepam for a while, but then the doc wouldn't refill the scrip and suggested I take Benadryl an hour before bedtime. That worked OK for a while, but sometimes it would have the opposite effect and I would wake up after about an hour, feeling totally hyper! I quit that.

Most nights now I sleep pretty well. (Maybe getting a new mattress helped!) When I can't sleep, I do like you guys ... go on the computer for a while, maybe read a few of my favorite blogs. Sometimes taking a couple regular Tylenol will help me relax enough to go back to sleep.

Fortunately, my husband's a pretty sound sleeper, so it doesn't seem to keep him up. At least it seems from his snoring that he's sleeping just fine!

I thought anything taken for RLS was to be taken all the time and not be weened off.

It seems like in Canada they only give you either Mirapex (Pramipexole) or Levocarb (Carbidop). I wish their were more options here for RLS treatment.

First time I had symptoms of RLS was when I first was on dialysis back when I was 16 and the hospital was paying for my mom and I to stay at a hotel because we were from out of town. My mom and I stayed in the same room and she was getting annoyed because she could hear me constantly moving my legs about and she yelled at me to stop it. :(

Clonazepam (generic for Klonopin) is used alone or along with other medications to treat convulsive disorders such as epilepsy. It is also prescribed for panic disorder--unexpected attacks of overwhelming panic accompanied by fear of recurrence. Clonazepam anti-anxiety medication belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines.

If you stop taking drugs of this type they must be weaned off.

That is not what I meant. I meant that I thought anyone would have to keep taking the RLS pills or else the effects of RLS would come back.

Angie I'm not absolutely sure but I think sleeping pills are thought of diifferently beacause taken over a long period I think your body gets neutralised to them and then you have to have stronger and stronger doses. The two drugs that you mentioned Pramipexole and Carbidop, did they cause any daytime drowsiness, and how well did they work, if at all?

I am on the HOME CHOICE PRO from Baxter's, at-least with this machine I can dis-connect between sessions, (one & a half hours) get up out of bed and go onto the web, (usually IHD) this is always worth a look in the middle of the night!

I also like borrow audio books form the library, I download these onto my MP3 player and when I cant sleep I lie back and listen, you can switch off the light, close your eyes and relax, and, if you fall asleep it's a bonus!!

I have been asked if I have trouble sleeping by the dialysis unit nurses.  I don't.  One of them told me it is probably because I am still working and I wear my self out pretty well, so I sleep like a rock.  Thank goodness.  On vacations I sure can tell the difference between the sleep I get then and when I am working.

I guess I'm kind of "lucky" in that my dialysis time is 5:30 p.m. So I am usually home about 9 or 9:30 and there is very little to do then except veg in front of the tube and go to bed. And snack. I'm always STARVED when I get home from dialysis.

But sometimes I wake up after sleeping for an hour or so. Then it can be very difficult to go back to sleep. Sometimes taking a couple Tylenol helps.

Hey Rerun, sounds like you have restless body and leg syndrom. I was given .05mg of klonopin for that. Now I sleep and don't jump all over the place. Works for my. Talk to your nephrologist. They are the ones that told me most dialysis patients have this. Good luck. :snowman;

I just asked my doctor today about something to help me sleep. I sleep fine after I fall asleep, but I have a hard time going to sleep. I'm on CCPD, dry during the day. When I hook up and fill, it makes my back hurt and makes me uncomfortable, so I toss and turn all night until I'm just too tired to stay up any longer. Then I fall asleep and sleep all the next day. My sleeping habits are so screwed up...I finally fall asleep about 4 or 5 AM, then wake up at 1 or 2 pm. I hate that bc I live at the beach...it takes away from the time I could be outside.

Anyway, my dr told me to try some over-the-counter stuff, so I'll buy some tomorrow. Hopefully it'll help! BTW, what's this RLS?? Is taht why I can't get comfortable at night? Did I mention I also have a blood clot in my leg that almost completely cuts off the blood flow to my leg?? That probably has something to do with it...

it sounds like you need to re-set your body clock...What if you set your alarm for 8am,then got up and made yourself  stay awake all day-maybe you could fall asleep earlier? I have been sleeping too late too,but I am sleeping too much-usually 10-12 hours although one day last week I did 15...and I don't have ESRD.,I am just so tired.

Yeah, that's probably part of it too. But sometimes I am SO tired, so I try to go to bed early but all I do is toss and turn. There have been a few nights that I didn't sleep at all until 8 or 9 the next day. Last night I only got 6 hours. When I told my dietician, she said that it may be stress keeping me awake. Makes sense bc I've been stressed out about school, my website, and I cook and clean all the time and run errands all day. It does get stressful!! lol But I know that's just part of growing up!! :)

I think that Shay is just having trouble sleeping from not being used to the type of dialysis she is on and it making her back hurt and her fel uncomfortable. Give it time. It gets better.

As for what RLS is, it is Restless Leg Syndrome (http://www.davita.com/article/ckd/895).

I found this (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12360562&dopt=Abstract) interesting:
Quote
In all patients, RLS symptoms disappeared within 1 to 21 days after transplantation.

Naps are good for you. Research is showing that an hour long nap can be a power up through the rest of the day.  However when I take a dialysis tired nap it can be three hous long, so that is not really a power nap, more like a really hard snooze.  The I am up later and sleep less at night.  This causes tired all of the time.    But then I AM tired all of the time.

I have tried three sleep meds.  Temazepam, Ambien (5mg and the CR), and Lunesta (10mg?).  Ambien CR worked the best for me.  The Lunesta worked but had a horrible side effect which left a metallic taste in my mouth into the next day.  If I wanted to give up dairy, Lunesta would be my cure.  I took one sip of milk and thought I was going to loose it, it was truly a horrible taste.

Thanks for sharing that sinoxid. I too lack in the sleep department. I have only tried over the counter type sleep aids but I have to take triple the amount recommended to fall asleep but still wake up several times in the middle of the night.

I don't sleep too badly. I think I have my job to thank for that! I work alot and it's very physical, then I have the rest of my life to contend with! I usually try to go to bed by 11 pm and I sleep until 7-8 am. My pets get me up for breakfast. I think I even sleep better than hubby. I do, however, toss and turn a bit because my cat sleeps next to me and she is too hot!!! The nights when I do have a bad sleep and my mother says I look tired I'll simply explain I didn't sleep well. Her response: Why not? Drives me nuts.  :banghead;

Sluff, I don't know buddy but I think taking 3x recommended dosage is a bad idea.  If you truly having problems try the Ambien, start with 5mg and increase if necessary. :twocents;

carson, true insomnia, I don't believe has to do with weather or not someone holds a job.  I know you probably didn't mean it but it sounds like you think we're lazy or something.  Anyway, you are fortunate to not to have sleep problems, at least any serious ones.

The whole time on dialysis (3 yrs) both hemo and PD... I had insomnia. Usually caused from RLS, but alot of the times it wasn't my legs bothering me.. I just couldn't go to sleep.

Ever since I started walking on the treadmill 30 mins a day everyday (only started this a week or 2 ago) I have slept just fine... and through the night.  :thumbup;

Angela, that's interesting, because since I got more active these past 3 weeks, I have slept somewhat better.
I still have to have an aid to get to sleep, but am sleeping straight through, good restful sleep. I work 40 hours
a week, full time job, so it is necessary for me to get my sleep just to function the next day! It's a cycle, once
I start feeling better, I get more active, which makes me feel even more better, which means I become even more
active...and my sleeping patterns improve. Just gotta feel better first, which I have now done!

Angela, are you still on dialysis?   Reports show that RLS (Insomnia) tends to go away with a transplant.  Maybe that is the reason you have relief.  Sorry but I thought your post was misleading.  It sounds like you want to think a treadmill cured your insomnia and that is kinda funny to me since I do tend to do some walking almost daily and still have had problems.

No, as my signature states, I had a transplant in January. However, I still have RLS. I expected it to go away right away after transplant like my first transplant... however, the 2 transplants are 2 totally different experiences. I also still get regular Insomnia not caused from RLS. I don't think walking on a treadmill has "cured" my insomnia, I was implying that EXERCISE period of any kind, usually helps with insomnia, especially in people like myself, who did basically nothing but sit around for the last 3 years of my life on dialysis. Exercise has been helping me sleep, and when I went for 3 days without doing any walking like that I had trouble sleeping again... so there is definately a link for myself... and I am here to offer advice on what works for me, as it MAY help someone else... don't mean it will... just like everything, not one thing works for us all... :)

We should start a new thread on dreams, the only thing is if we did that it would have to be x rated for goofyninas dreams plus we couldn't afford the bandwidth.

I told my PD nurse that i didnt want to take Benadryl anymore cuz of that very reason of not being able to wake up and feeling groggy all day,  I asked her if i could try tylenol PM and she said because it containg Benadryl, i would probably be feeling the same way with it.   :-\  How many do you take?  Do you really fall asleep right after taking it?  Benadryl takes some time to kick in (like 2 hours) and i take 50mg of it.   :o

GoofyNina, I just took one today, when I hooked up about 3 hours ago. I am still awake, darn it. I would normally have taken two. Now I'm not sure what to do. If I should go ahead and take another one or not. Darn it all. I gotta take something. I need to sleep. I hate having insomia.

Just goes to show how different each person's chemistry is:  if I take one Benedryl I'm asleep in about 15 minutes, and it feels as if my elbows go loose after about 10 minutes.  But if I take 2 Tylenol PM, it takes me up to 3 hours to go to sleep!

I have to admit that the Benadryl is what i miss the most about Hemo,  they used to shoot 50mg in me and i would hold on, feel it coming, then all my insides will get all warm and tingly, slowly my eyes would start closing and then i am OUT!!  Damn, i wish these pills would do that, not even with 75mg can i get that feeling, lol,  maybe i should drink a bottle of liquid benadryl huh?  Hey, does anyone drink the liquid benadryl?  How does that affect you? hmmmm  ::)

So Susie, basically I can have it no questions asked, some days I could really use it, ya know?  It all depends on what part of the rollercoaster I am on.  I used to take OTC sleepaids on days I needed to but I don't like the way I felt after four hours and having to get up and finish the day.

Would you still wake up if your bp crashed?  I'm always afraid to take anything to help me sleep in case I sleep though a low blood sugar episode, anyhow.  The only time I've managed to sleep at the center was when I went there straight from surgery and was still groggy from the anesthetic.  I wasn't driving myself home then, either, and that might be a problem the rest of the time.
Title: Re: Can't SLEEP!!

I believe that I would be able to wake up, for whatever the reason, however I do not consider that to be a big factor since I have not had any issues with blood pressure or crashing.  There was a time when I would get cramps and feel completely wiped out toward the end of treatment but that was before I took control of my dry weight and corrected it.  Since then, I walk out of the center feeling fine, I have not gone in more than 2.8 kilos over and sometime after the weekend I am less that 1 kilo over.  Hooty whoooo!!!  ;D

You should George,  i (or any other patient in my center) had a problem when asked if they can have it.  I was on Hemo for 3 years and never had a problem waking up if i didnt feel right.  What's it going to hurt to ask if you can have it?  I think the nurses liked giving it to us cuz it would knock us out and they wouldnt have to deal with us for a good 3 hours :P  Please let me know what they say, and as far as how i felt when i got off, i had the normal washed out feeling but i did feel a little reste ;) Good luck  :thumbup;

We sound like a bunch of Benadryl druggies on here! Hehehehe!
I need the Benadryl just to sit in the damned chair for four hours. It takes the edge off of my day. Also it gets me to relax enough that I do not mind sitting for four hours in an ice cold room and I can sleep for about an hour and a half.  I break out my hot packs and put them under the blanket with me, get the benadryl and I am okay.

(Screaming into the night)..........has anyone come up with a sleep aid that works since this thread was started?  Ambien gives me 2 hours sleep, Rozarium (sp) does not work at all, Sonata does not work at all, Lunesta gave me 4 hours the first night and 2 hours since that.  Last night I took Lunesta at 11, woke at 12:30, cleaned etc until 4, took 1/2 Ambien and slept until 6:30.........I know the Dr would scream but I am so very tired, I just don't know what else to do. I do not nap during the day, sure wish I could.  Any suggestions?

I have no suggestions for you as I'm having a horrible time with sleep myself.  I didn't sleep Tuesday or Wednesday night at all! I was awake for 63 1/2 hours straight!!! I finally slept Thursday night, but only for about 8 hours. I would have thought I would have slept longer then that. Now, once again, I'm wide awake. It is now 4:50am!!! I have Ambien, but it either doesn't work, or it works too well. I am groggy the next day, and wake up with a horrendous headache. I've tried Benadryl, which works well, but it gives me horrible restless legs lately.

I'm not even on dialysis yet. Probably soon, but not yet. Are sleep problems common as your kidney function percentage reaches the teens?

Oh Paddbear, I'm so sorry...now I feel like I should enjoy my 2 hours.  Boy I wish someone would come up with an answer for us.  This has been since I started dialysis.  Before that I slept all day every day.  I don't get groggy from Ambien and have to avoid Benadryl if possible due to my Glaucoma.  Good Luck to you and hope you get some sleep too.

Im not even in renal failure and I never sleep through the night.  I think insomnia is now chronic problem for most everyone.  None of the sleep aids work for me.  I am awake most of the night thinking about what has to be done, what I didn't do, the next day, think about everything.  My daughter calls it "Mental Maturbation" cause I can't leave my mind alone at night.  That and the restless legs. :stressed;

Monrein,  I have been premenopausal for years, according to lab tests.  I just (October) had a total (ovaries and all) hysterectomy, due to "6 or 7" tumors in the uterus.    Dr. never mentioned the sleep problem... Where is my patient education???  Will this taper off, I'm m now on hormones, though I don't want to take them.  Sorry, I'm now officially off topic!

I don't take hormones but I'm 5 years the other side of menopause and still get the hot flashes and the insomnia.  The thing that works best for me (and some of my non-renal friends) is to limit caffeine, and get regular exercise.   The hormones usually take care of both these symptoms but sometimes when you stop them, the symptoms return with a vengeance.

I don't take anything to sleep and I never sleep at D because then I really get messed up.

Good luck.  Sorry off-topic.

Here are two tips that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

Protein-rich meals are stimulating for many hours, and make it harder to fall asleep.  Whereas the "lift" from carbohydrates runs out much quicker.  And large meals give you more calories, more energy, which you need when you want to stay awake.  So I have interchanged my breakfast and dinner:  My protein-rich, largest meal is breakfast--such as a nice portion of chicken with all the trimmings.  And my dinner consists of maybe a small rice dish and some fruit.   I find that such a little, relatively protein-poor dinner helps to slow down my metabolism and let me fall asleep.

Another psychological trick that I find works, is this:  If you try to force yourself to go to sleep, you just get upset even more and make it even harder to go to sleep.   Instead, try to force yourself to stay awake as long as you can.  I mean seriously.  When your eyelids start to droop, force them to open and try to keep them open.  Your contrarian body will try to do the opposite and you'll be sleeping.  Remember, it's often easier to doze off when you do NOT want to:  At work, driving a car, etc.  Try to do that at home too--pretend you do NOT want to fall asleep and see what happens.

Hi,
As you guys know my hubby Les is the
D. patient - but I cannot, cannot sleep!
I think even this  :Kit n Stik;  would not help
me get a full nite's sleep  :rofl;

I only drink coffee in the AM and drink diet
decaf soda, but my mind loves to race on,
and once I wake up (usually about 2 am)
boy I am usually up for the count!

I think everyone in the US is having a problem,
seems like everybody I talk to is an insomniac!

That's what I asked for Christmas, a good night's sleep.  Every night it's the same thing - toss & turn.  I've been spending most of my nights in the basement, on the recliner, watching television or something to try and put me to sleep.  I do it in the basement, so I don't wake up my family.  Letterman and Conan are done, and I'm still looking for something to put me to sleep.  If I turn off the TV, my mind races and I can't sleep.  It usually works to find something that I can listen to, but doesn't keep me thinking - like a sitcom or cooking show.  Then, the alarm goes off and it's time to get up for work.  Another day of pushing through with little or no sleep at all......

It is ridiculous how many of us can't sleep!   I am like you cherpep.  I go to bed, toss and turn and may eventually dose off but am soon wide awake.  I just get up and watch Letterman, then The Late, Late Show, Entertainment Tonight, etc etc.   I don't ever take a nap, hoping that will help.  Nothing helps.  It is getting old.  If I could just stop my mind and the worry and thoughts running through my brain.   My husband thinks I should drink a glass of wine every night.  I am afraid it would take the whole bottle!   :wine;    :rofl;
