I dont know if any of you have been following the story of Iggy, the puppy that Ellen DeGeneres adopted and kept for a month, found another home for the dog and the animal shelter that she adopted the dog from, came and took the dog back, now she is pleading to give the dog back, the shelter is saying they are going to sue cuz they are now receiving death threats , i dont think they should've taken it in the first place, it was in a good home, any thoughts on this anybody :popcorn;
-
Damn! People needed to leave the dog where it was.
-
Did you watch her show when she was telling about the dog? She was sobbing, pleading for them to let the family keep the dog. It was so sad. I think they really messed up. For crying out loud---it was Ellen's hairdresser---she knew the family, knew the dog was going to a great home. Somedays the world is so crazy!!
-
They are saying that it is in their contract that they do not adopt dogs out to families that have kids under 14, these girls are 11 and 12 for Pete's sake. I did see that show and it tore my heart up, now you know if that was Oprah, something would've been done by now. It pisses me off that people are now saying just cuz Ellen has money doesnt give her the right? the right to WHAT?? All she did was find a good home for a dog when she knew she couldn't care for it. I think those people are doing this BECAUSE Ellen has money and they are just going to try and milk it for all they can get, DAMN THEM TO HELL I SAY!!! :banghead;
-
This story makes me upset. We have so many animals who are put to sleep everyday or die out on the streets alone because they don't have homes or they don't get adopted in time.. and here this puppy went ot a nice loving family, they should of left it at that, and nothing should of been done. It should of stayed where it was at it's new home.. and lived happily ever after.
Ugh!
-
I think they should have at least given the new home first choice after inspection of the home was done. Rules are rules but I think they could bend the rules on this one, not because it was Ellen but because she had found a good home for the dog and they could have repaid for the dog if it was a money thing. I wonder why they didn't just allow them to fill out an application to keep the dog...hmmm?
-
I think if the rescue organization was so concerned about the girls being younger, they could have come to some solution where they did house visits, monitored the family, whatever they felt necessary. You don't just show up at somebody's house and literally take a family member out of the home. Then the rescue group got snitty about it because of the on air plea and adopted the animal out to somebody else. This poor dog has to be confused having been in a few different homes.
The rescue group botched this one up pretty badly. If you're really placing an animal for the animal's benefit then this was all wrong.

As an animal lover, my heart goes out to the family the dog was taken from. I would be devasted also. I feel the puppy was in a loving home, with a family. The dog was safe.
However, she signed a contract and that's legal and binding. For others who don't have celebrity status, they would have to do as the shelter says. So why should Ellen and this family be any different?

The shelter where we got both of our dogs has the exact same thing in their contract. About a year ago, this exact same incident happened. Someone who had adopted a dog, couldn't keep it because it kept biting at their toddler. They gave it to their neighbor, who they had known for over 10 years and was a very good dog owner. The shelter found out and they took the dog back. But, unlike the Ellen case, they let them have the dog back after interviewing them and visiting their house. I think the adoption agency that Ellen got her dog from just doesn't like her and wanted to stir up trouble and make a name for them selves. Well, they got it! And personally, being a huge animal lover, I'm glad they got the death threats! Serves them right! I guarantee nothing will come of them. Animal people are not violent (with words we are, just not actions!).
-
But Ellen did say that upon signing the contract, they were supposed to reprogram the chip that is in Iggy to add Ellen's name and that was never done either, so i think they messed up first :-\

And if it was for the publicity, well, they did it all the wrong way, i think their business will suffer for this one for sure :thumbdown;

I think they should have at least given the new home first choice after inspection of the home was done. ...
In an interview on TV the owner of the group said she spoke with the hairdresser and asked TWICE for them to please come down a fill out an application and the hairdresser refused and hung up on her. That being said, I believe they should have made more of an effort to leave the dog where it was.
BTW, I have dealt with many people associated with dog and cat rescue and some of them are quite loony.

i dont understand how you can purchase a dog - a peice of property and the people you bought it from still call the shots. How can their be a contract for that? are you just leasing the dog?
-
I dont consider purchasing but adopting is how i see it. ;)

Closer to leasing than a purchase when you deal with most pet "adoption" groups. I could tell you things about some of them that would leave you speechless. Sometimes their arrogance is almost unbelievable. They too often pat themselves on the back for saving animals and then treat the people who really want them like garbage. I no longer refer anyone to petfinder.com due to three bad experiences with groups from that site. After decades in grooming and boarding I've met all kinds and it only takes a few to spoil the image. If you "adopt" an animal, check out the group carefully BEFORE you start looking at their animals. I thank God that someone is willing to invest the time and $$ to save unwanted animals but it's still buyer beware.
-
I've adopted 2 Min-Pins and no one has checked up on them or me. I would want to make sure they had a good home not leave it up to the Sheater.
Ellen should have told the shelter that the family was just babysitting her dog. Who would know the difference if she is gone a lot.
-
the whole idea of having to 'answer' to a shelter-has no one taken them to court for -i dont know violation of propety rights or something.
and goofy- that is a sweet sentiment, my pets are family too...
why can't she just call the cops, and make them get off her lawn? why does a third party have ANY power? Yes they can suggest you bring it back, but force the issue? I dont understand, I bought two of my cats from a pet store, I would just dare them to step onto my property, that is the most ridiculus thing I have ever heard. I guess I just don't understand HOW this is legal? Has it been challenged in court?

Most rescue groups require the new owners to sign a contract in which they agree to return the dog to the group if they do not keep it. The contract is legal and binding.
-
its bloody ridiculous. she goes on national tv to cry like a frikkin baby over a dog. the family she gave it to already has a dog, for one thing. for another thing, isn't there more vital and important issues that are happening worldwide and more worthy of attention?
the reason she was so upset is because she's nothing but a spoiled brat with too much money and she's just not used to not getting her way. selfish, self-serving little bitch.
:urcrazy;

You're obviously not an animal person.
-
i am very much an animal person. the issue is not about the animal at all. its about a power struggle between a spoiled brat and the organisation that she signed a contract with, fair or not, that she thinks, because of her 'celebrity' status, that she can be above the rules set by the organisation, even though she did sign the contract.
-
:lol; Sounds like you just don't like her is all.
-
LL, this has nothing to do with her celebrity status, Ellen did what she thought was right for the dog, who's to know how shelters treat their dogs, i would much rather find a good home for any pet before sending them back to a shelter. I am sorry but a dog is not "just a dog" it is a loyal companion, it has feelings just like a human being and they know when they are being loved. I applaud Ellen for not being afraid to come forward on her talkshow, she does so much for so many people and never not once has asked for a bit of praise, she is just awesome like that. YOU GO GIRL :bow;
-
well, you're certainly entitled to your view, nina. but i see her as a needy, spoiled brat who can't take 'no' for an answer to any whim she has. the family already had a dog, and sure, not all dogs are well cared for by some organisations, but that isn't the point, here. a contract was signed and ellen did not honor it. simple, really. her emotional outburst on tv proves what a spoiled brat she really is, and how important it is to her that people like her and do what she wants. why else would she give things away so easily? to buy love and attention. sure, you could say that 'she's a generous person' - but is it generous to give away gifts when money is no object? i don't think so.
-
To each their own views LL, you see it your way and i will remain seeing it mine :2thumbsup;
-
but is it generous to give away gifts when money is no object? i don't think so.
I think so. How else would you give away gifts? When money is an option? I wish I could be so generous, but I am too poor at the time being.. and if I had money and it was no option, I would give away gifts also.. :thumbup; (Sorry, off-topic)
So to be on topic, I guess I will just say, contract or no contract, the dog was given to a nice family.. and in my opinion, the well being of the dog is what should be the most important thing. :)
-
Without reading whole thread, there's an awful lot of politics surrounding animal welfare organisations these days, and some of these organisations can really get a bit over the top at times, and some of them are down right power-trippers.
-
Goofy Nina, Well said. I couldn't agree with you more.
-
Rerun, I agree with you too. I wish Ellen had of said they were just careing for the dog while she was away. I know she was doing the best thing for the dog & isn't that what really counts.
Poor little pup does not need to be put back into a shelter cage when he had a good home.
One thing I don't understand is why the hairdresser hung up on the lady when asked to come in & file an application. I would have been there in a flash.
-
btw, with "controversy" and "Iggy" both in the thread title, I truly thought this was going to be about Iggy Pop :rofl;
-
I tell people my dog is an illegal alien. She was born in Ireland and imported into the US by a dog seller. She's an Irish Soft-Coated Wheaten terrier, Wheatie for short. I did indeed "Buy" her for money, $1500, and the dealer just let me take her, no questions asked. I think Animal Rescues are great,but sometimes their rules are too strict. This particular rescue says no pets for kids under 14. The girls in this family are like 10 and 12. Why can't a family with kids have dogs? I had a Beagle at age 9. She was my best buddy and lived with me to the age of 21 (me, not her). Tears ago , I visited a shelter with the hopes of adopting a kitten. i told them I was a single, working female and the animal would be alone for up to ten hours a day. They said "no". Several months later, I found a tiny kitten hiding under my car in the snow. I took him home and we had 16 great years together, I do think Ellen meant well but acted improperly.
-
i have nothing against ellen, really, and i am not against women, gays or even lesbians, either.
i love all animals and i recognise that not all organisations take proper care of the animals in their care. but i also know that many people abuse and mistreat animals that are in their care. people buy a cute little puppy for a gift and as it grows up, the recipient gets 'tired' of it and neglect begins.
organisations would not have to enforce rules and regulations if people were more considerate of the animals' they are responsible for.
then there's the people who have a dog for 'protection.' i think that's just as cruel as direct abuse.
dogs are natural protectors. if they are fed and loved, they will give their lives for their 'feeder.'
my comment, 'just a dog' was a comparison to the millions of children who die every day, all over the world, from a simple lack of clean drinking water. if ellen is so generous and caring, why doesn't she spend some time on them? would you choose a child's life over a dogs?
because those children don't have televisions and can't worship her spoiled ass, that's why.
:rofl;
