My daughter's fish tank keeps getting a "green, slimy, mossy" type of stuff in her tank. This is now the 3rd time in a few weeks. When I first noticed it, I totally took everything out of her tank, cleaned the tank, replaced the rocks with brand new ones and such, put a new filter in, and the conditioner and so on, and 3 or 4 days later, it was back again. I repeated the process, totally empty'd the tank, replaced the rocks, filter and so on... and now 3 days later, it is back. I don't know whats wrong, how to fix it... I am doing wht I am supposed to be doing, and I am having no problems with my sons tank... could it be from the fish? Is the fish sick and causing this? I got no clue. Ideas?
-
do you have any cleaner fish? like a catfish or a plecostomus sucker fish?
-
No, I dont... Is there room in a 2.5 gallon tank for one and a Betta?
-
oh- I dont think they can live with a beta- ask at the pet store- maybe a snail would work..
-
In those conditions I normally would use a weedless spinner bait or a top runner such as a jitter bug. Do you have special conditions like no trolling. What about boat rentals are they available?? >:D Boxman
-
:lol; boxman Stay away from my fishies :P
-
Or a weedless Wallydiver. Or better yet what about a "Purple Wurple"? Do Beta's prefer worms or Leach's? I got the boat Boxman, let's go!!
-
Hey now... you two will have to go through inspection if you ever come over, make sure there is no fishing gear :lol;
-
But what is the best way to cook a Beta? Fry? Poach? Broil? :)
Seriously, I'd look into a "cleaner" type of fish/snail/etc -- what everyone else here has suggested. :)
-
My dad use to raise bettas and if I remember right, there is an algea cleaner tablets to use along with other type of drops. We never had the problem you are having though.
-
Brenda, Angela wasn't home so I snuck in and fished off the shore. This one hit a wooly bully crank bait. I was useing a spinning rig with 8lb test. Bring the boat by when you can we can wait out in the street till she leaves. Ohh I did throw it back to cover my tracks... ;D Boxman

:lol;
Your too funny. :)

You use a filter with a betta? I've never heard of using filters with bettas before. I've had a lot of them over the years and never used one, just cleaned out the bowl every couple of weeks. I've almost always had mine in a vase with a plant in the top. The bettas eat the roots and the roots help oxygenate and clean the water. The slime probably indicates he's sick. I had that problem with my last one. He soon developed a black area on him, and then he died. I can't remember what it's called at the moment, but I'd prepare for the inevitable.
-
Angela, you CANNOT put any other animal in the tank with the beta. It will fight to the death, either his or the other animal's. Ours has killed a female beta and three snails. The green stuff is normal in any fish tank, I would try the tablets that Chris suggested. Good luck! (Hope it's not impending death, our's has the green icky stuff, too.)
-
I shall try the tablets! Thanks everyone! :)
-
Brenda, hurry up and get down here with the boat a storm front just moved through and the water temps are just right....Boxman
-
Boxman, you better watch it, Angela is gonna bop ya a good one if you keep drooling over her fishies :rofl;
-
To Angela's fishies:
Meow, meow purrr, purrr, meow meow!
-
:rofl; KIT!!! You are sooooo bad :rofl;
-
Hey now! I need fish protection over here!

We have a Betta as well and never have this problem either. What kind of water are you using because that could be the cause? I would suggest going to the store and buying bottled water instead of using tap water if you are using tap water now. The 1 gallon milk jugs of natural spring water are what you should look for. We don't use a tablet, but we do have some drops that we put in the water. Also as others have said DO NOT put anthing else in that tank with the beta or it will continue to attack it until one of them is dead. There is a very good reason they call them fighting fish. Good luck.

::)
-
Okarol--that's very cute!
-
Okarol are you challenging me! just remember that with a Diawa level wind bait caster I have a great deal of range so I could drop a fuzzy bugger weedless lure from the street right in the pond and as long as I don't yell "fish on" to loud you would never know what happened...Boxman

:rofl; :rofl; Boxman, your killin' me, :rofl; :rofl;

As I mentioned earlier, I have 2 fish tanks. They are exactly the same, except the color. I used the same kind of gravel for each one, same kind of decorations for each one, same kind of fish for each one, same filter, same water, same food, same cleaner, same drops, same everything. They are in different bedrooms, but perfectly the same. I am only having this problem in 1 fish tank, not the other one. I already know not to put anything with them, which is why they are both alone, hehe. I will be buying the tablets tomorrow and try that in her fish tank.. see if does the trick or not. :thumbup;

Angela, is the one that's growing the stuff near a window that gets more sunlight than the other? Ours sits in front of a window, and my husband seems to think that the added light might contribute to the problem.
-
AHHHHH! Eureka! Photosynthesis
Yes algae does like to grow in the sunlight. Have to wait to see what Angela says.
-
Take a bottle of aquarium water to a pet shop that sells fishes and ask them for help. There are chemicals to fix all kinds of problems. Also, try taking half the water out of the tank and discard it. Replace it with fresh water.
-
No, the tank doesn't sit by a window.
As for changing the water, yes, i was doing the changing half the water in the tank thing once a week, however today I cleaned the whole tank, discarded all the old water, cleaned the tank before adding new water, cleaned the filter and all the decorations and so on. I go to town tomorrow, and I will get some tablets and see if that helps any, if not I shall take a sample of the water to a pet store when i am able to get a ride to one.
