I had almost given up faith in the empathy of the human race until I found this site. I have been on hemo dialysis since March 2006 (age 55) and continue to hate the process. I have felt offended by the denial of most medical staff telling me “you must feel better”. I have had a diagnosis of CKD (Glomerulonephritis) since 1983 and fought to stay off the machines until I could go no further.
I experienced a great deal of AV fistula pain for the first 12 months of dialysis with an AV fistula that had been in place and had matured for over 4 years. I practiced self cannulation after my 2nd dialysis when I was infused learning that my fistula had not formed correctly. I had to use a 200 BFR for quite a while and now I am up up to 400 BFR. The fatigue following a treatment continues to plague me.
I considered Nxstage, but even with over a year and a half of self cannulation, I still despise needles. I have asked to be placed on CCPD to regain some balance and stop the madness of my body adjusting to Hemo 3 times a week. I will screen for PD in a few weeks as I choose to research and weigh the pros and cons. I have found more pros.
I am thrilled to find this site and in reading the forums I have found a source of Knowledge, Experience, Strength and Hope.
I have worked as a therapist with addiction since 1985 and choose to continue working 40 hrs weekly. The loss of time in my community and hobbies have taken a toll but as each of you may know, time management is a crucial reality .
I often don’t have the energy to browse or answer much in the way of forum exchange but wanted to thank each of you for time and energy.
I did not have the pleasure of talking with Epoman but his effort and dedication to this process has already changed my
perspective and given me hope.
Thanks
John

:waving; Greetings John!
I think in a way this forum works like a recovery program, one kidney patient helping another, and when all hope seems gone the members here encourage and inspire those who are struggling. We help each other and in turn, it helps us too.
I am sorry it's been so tough for you. I hope you find something that works and you feel better.
Welcome!

Welcome to our community! You have really tasted the horrid side of this renal challenge. But all this is testimony to the strength of the human spirit. We can make up our minds not to be victims, but victors. At least I have. We are of the same age group (I am 57) and I started haemodialysis late 2005. This site was a godsend to me. Not only were many questions answered from non-professionals (so I could understand ;)), but here was a place where I could find support, caring voices and a place to vent and rant when I needed to. So take advantage of all this site has to offer.
We are so thankful for this vision of Epoman which continues to be a lighthouse in the renal community.

Welcome JR. If you're thinking of Peritoneal Dialysis, there's quite a few of us on this site who do PD. Most people who do PD after doing Haemo are in aggreement that PD is so much better. It gives you so much more freedom especially using a cycler, less fluid restriction and no more needles. Slight drawback is the risk of peritonitus. Keep us posted on your progress. :grouphug;

Welcome JR to ihatedialysis.com
It's great to see you here and I hope we see more of you. Epoman started this site for patients by patients, who better to know the needs of each other than the very people who share the same medical diagnosis.
Glad you made it to the forums.
