Last night, Rolando broke his ankle badly. He is in the hospital with the course of treatment currently undertermined. We are devastated on many levels. I hope it can be fixed without surgury and that he heals easily. I hope we can manage the transfers.
This puts an end to our Vegas trip. We are so disappointed.
-
Oh alene and rolando, I am so sorry. I hope and pray that it is a speedy recovery :grouphug;

I'm very sorry to hear about Ro's accident. What is important now is that he is in a good place and is getting the right treatment. Vegas isn't going anywhere. It will still be around long after Ro is better.
My best to both of you!

Has anyone heard how Ro is?

Has anyone heard how Ro is?
Updating, Rolando's ankle is broken in three places. The bone, happily, is not displaced. They have placed his lower leg and foot in a stabilizing boot. They did not put him in a cast because they want his skin inspected every day. He cannot place any weight AT ALL on it for two months(!!!) He's in some pain but is loving that morphine.
Rolando is still in the hospital. We came in with a broken ankle but they are using the opportunity to do his 30,000 mile inspection and servicing. We really hate going into the emergency room because we can almost never avoid this situation. Hopefully we will be set free on Tuesday. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and encouragement. It helps a lot.
This is an enhancement - I am posting this from his hospital room. Nice.

So glad he is at least getting pain relief from the morphine. Hope it heals faster than hoped. I totally understand the hating to go to the ER also, I know everytime I have to go to the ER I should bring my cell phone charger and such b/c I am admitted everytime.

We missed you so much in Vegas. Hope everything heals well and he keeps getting relief from the pain. I am so sorry this happened. Sending best wishes :grouphug;

-
Thanks Alene for keeping us updated and I am so sorry you could not make Vegas, but Rolando's care is obviously paramount.
Ro..Hey ya old geezer take care of that ankle, see ya next year at the big party, breaking an ankle is not a reccomended course of action just to chase the pretty nurses around but I guess it is one way to get the nurses to come to you :urcrazy;
-
Hope your feeling better ro.
Take care of yourself. :cuddle;

Thank you all for your caring and concern. I was very diligent in passing on each hug sent his way and made sure that he saw all of your kind words.
We are home. Rolando is still asleep and has not needed any pain medication since being home (coincidence?) We have been out twice (to dialysis) and up and around the house. We are still trying to master the fine art of using a transfer board. It can be scary but we are modifying our equipment and house to accommodate it. Rolando is getting one hell of a workout. The transfer board is all him. He must (develop and) use his own upper body strength to move along the board. I am very impressed with him. Soon he will be quite the hunk dressed in his muscle tees. (I'll post pictures). I am hoping that he wants to go out today to the movies, to eat, or perhaps to the local comedy club. He's been reading and checking for chat, but nobody is talking.
They kept him in the hospital for one full week. We finally escaped late Wednesday. After we were unable to leave on Monday, things got rough. As I am sure you all know, spending a week in the hospital away from your family, familiar surroundings, and all your stuff is hard, and we were being held prisoner in the room. We finally got cleared of contact precautions on Tuesday (New CDC protocol or so we were told - a dialysis patient comes in, they are checked for MRSA not once but twice - you must have a history of two negatives before they clear you. Just so happens that we were there long enough this time to get the two negatives.)
Tuesday - not only were we cleared, we were given lobby privileges (to abuse). So we went down to the lobby, out the front door, across the street and down the block to Boston Market for dinner. A little adventure and being bad can be very refreshing.
The next day, Wednesday, his leg was a little swollen (is this normal they asked, how does a dialysis patient answer that question? Maybe, maybe not, could be edema...or not). So they ordered a "stat" sonogram and a "stat" reading. 7 hrs later, we were allowed to leave. And the nurse at checkout time, what an idiot!!! And aggressive about it too! I almost insisted on talking to the charge nurse, but at that point I wanted nothing to delay our escape.
-
Thanks for the update Alene. Thanks for the warning I'll be sure to not challenge Ro to an arm wrestling match with all that
new (reconditioned) upper body strength.
-

Sorry Sluff, but you've already been toppled, dethroned. It is Goofy, the champ, that Rolando will be looking to challenge (Susie, are you ready?)
Latest update: 3 weeks and two days later, we had our first office visit with the ortho. Everything looks the same - stable and in place. He broke both his tibia and fibula just above the ankle. It is supposedly too early for signs of healing on an x-ray. The next appointment is Nov. 28 - 7 weeks later. Signs of healing (or the lack thereof) should be evident by then. I am hoping for the best...
-
O Boy! how did this happen? I broke a tibia in 4 places once, I can't imagine breaking the tibia and thibia. Are your bones brittle from the meds associated with dialysis like epomans were? or were you trying to be 20 again? I sure do hope you heal quickly. :grouphug;

For 4 years Rolando had been barefoot, wearing only bandages and socks to protect his wounds and feet. After his last wound healed on his only remaining foot a couple of months ago, he was put into a special shoe. A shoe, how nice! No more standing barefoot in dirty public places! The shoe - it was heavily padded with a sole about one inch thick.
Concurrently, his daughters (and wife) started expressing an interest in going out alone with their dad (and husband). They had started doing some transfers recently, with success, although in a very different manner than me. Being out alone with his family is very good for Rolando, so there had been about a half a dozen such outings in the recent past (pre shoe and post shoe). On that fateful evening, he was arriving home with his daughter (who weighs about 90 lbs) and transferring from the car to his wheelchair. As he was trying to spin around, his "platform" shoe somehow fell over. In the absence of a second leg, all of his 180 lbs came down on his twisting ankle and both bones snapped. He said it was quite loud.
Attributable to dialysis related bone loss? Maybe. I would prefer to believe that anyone bringing their full and substantial weight fully down onto one twisting ankle would break it. Wasn't this a common injury back in the '70s (the '70s - platform shoes, leisure suits and disco music?)
A special shoe selected by professionals... how very stupid of me to have trusted them.

OH, i am soooo ready :boxing; :boxing; :boxing; and i will be sure to shine up the tiara (i am sure Ro would look absolutely darling in it) ;) ;) BUT, he has to promise to give it back, i had a hard time getting it from Lil Miss Princess Sluff, lol, he was feeling oh so preeeetty :rofl;
-
That shoe looked good on the computer though.
Trust me Ro you really need to work out hard..I thought it was going to be an easy match so I didn't even try to work out...boy was i wrong..she took me down lickety split. She forced me to wear that tiara for 24 hours, talk about embarrassing... :lol;
-
Thanks for the report on how it happened Alene. I was wondering. I hope he heals well. :cuddle;

Are you talking about the "footwear" in our avatar? That pic is almost two years old. The offending special footwear was a Darco sandal supplied to us about two months ago. The footwear in the avatar is the sock with bandages underneath with a normal sandal used 'specially for that day's activity - a horseback ride up an active volcano. We didn't want his foot slipping through the stirrup. Here's the pic that precedes our avatar:
-
Hopefully you are feeling better rolando. I have been wondering how you are doing. Hope to catch you in chat some night. Not often any one there when I go there either.
-
I was referring to the people who manufactured the shoe design. The computer nerds probably never wore the shoe.
Anyway That is a real neat picture, I hope you had a great time.
-
Is this the offending sandal? Looks pretty dangerous!
-
THAT'S IT!!! I was blinded by my great relief that there would be something substantial between Rolando's foot and public restroom and movie theater floors. When I help him transfer, I support his weight so the danger was not apparent. With his daughters, he pivots on his heel while they act as spotters. Did it stick instead of pivoting, did he hit a rock or a twig, or perhaps even a joint in the pavers? Who knows.
Hopefully we'll get some good healing and we'll have this footwear/transfer issue to address again.
-
Hope you are feeling better ro.
