Title: Itchy palm--any ideas?
Post by: paddbear0000 on October 09, 2007, 06:08:00 AM
I now have another issue! The palm of my right hand (and I'm right handed!) has been itching like CRAZY for the last couple of days. It also travels up my arm too. I've been keeping it wrapped up in a gauze wrap, which minimizes the itching and using an ice pack once in a while. It's been getting progressively worse. Has anyone heard of this or had this problem? I've tried moisturizers, pain relievers, benadryl cream and benadryl, but with no luck. I'm calling the doc today because I can't take it anymore!!!

i have been told that much of the 'itching' issue is a result of high phosphorus levels.

cut back on dairy products, if you use them. they are the worst offenders.

Not my beloved cheese?!  :P I'm not sure it's diet related, as I have very little appetite and usually eat one meal a day or only a few small snacks per day. I know it can't be my potassium, as I haven't eaten much with potassium in a while. I've only been eating a tiny bit of cheese a day too. And that's about the only dairy product I've consumed lately.   :banghead;

there are some effective meds for high phosphorus, but cheese is definitely a major culprit. especially if it's what your main meal is. it doesn't matter so much, how much you eat, but what you eat when you do.

Don't forget, I'm not on dialysis yet. My function is still at 19%.

Lanacane, lanacane, lanacane,  that is the only thing that stopped the itching on my knee.  It works wonders, give it a try, and also watch the phosphorus intake, that is definetly one of the first signs of high phosphorus, those damn itchies.  :thumbdown;

I even tried pure benzocaine, the stuff you use to numb tooth pain! That hasn't even helped.

doesn't matter that you're not on dialysis yet. phosphorus will still be a problem for you, with only 19 percent function...

I too believe it could be your phosphorus. I hope you find relief soon. It can be very frustrating.

Old Wives Tale: Itchy palms mean you're coming into some money!
Sadly, it probably doesn't apply to dialysis patients.
Hope you get some relief. My suggestion would be epsom salts or Aveeno oatmeal bath - helps with hives and other itchy things.

the problem with phosphorus itching is that salves and creams don't work at all. the itching is caused internally, unlike a skin rash or insect bite and such. controlling diet and medications are the only solutions.

Back from the doctor (again)! Turns out it's carpal tunnel!  >:(  Apparently, it has to do with the nerves. I thought CT had to do with the tendons or something like that. He said that you first get an itchy type of feeling, but it's actually your nerves going nuts. Then it leads to severe pain and then numbness in the hand. Because it was caught early tho, it will hopefully be reversible and not require surgery. I sure hope not, since I need to use the computer mouse all day for school stuff (and of course IHD)! He said that the mouse was a big cause of it, but the worst is the fact that I sleep on my stomach on my hands. This brace thing sucks. It's impossible to type--I have since fixed the errors before posting tho--you never would have been able to figure out what I was saying!   :o

well, i'm happy you found the solution, paddbear. i was going to suggest that you shave your palms and take up knitting, instead, but i won't, now.
