I had my transplant June of 2006. I still get pain in my right side where my transplant is. I have never had any kind of surgery before. I was wondering if it takes a really long time for the muscles and things to heal. I have been checked out by my doctors for this. They say that the new kidney is fine and don't seem to be worried about this. Anyone else still have pain this long after transplant?

my husband had multiple operations in 06- and he still has alot of pain...they explained that scar tissue can take as long as three years to settle down, it still pulls when he moves, and his belly where he had the nephrectomy tingles pretty bad. and the pain is not trivial either.

I don't have pain with either of my transplant areas, or c-sections... however after my first transplant, I did have pain during sex, like it felt as if my kidney was being hit :lol;
I haven't had sex since 2005, sooo... idunno how it will be after this transplant.

I have heard of scar tissue causing discomfort for some patients after surgery. My husband had 3 back surgeries and a hip replacement and all his scars are painful.
Sometimes abdominal surgery can cause a small hernia and it can hurt even if it is very small. By far most hernias develop in the abdomen, when a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a localized hole, or "defect", through which adipose tissue, or abdominal organs covered with peritoneum, may protrude. Hernias may present either with pain at the site, a visible or palpable lump, or in some cases by more vague symptoms resulting from pressure on an organ which has become "stuck" in the hernia, sometimes leading to organ dysfunction. Fatty tissue usually enters a hernia first, but it may be followed by or accompanied by an organ. It is generally advisable to repair hernias in a timely fashion, in order to prevent complications. Most abdominal hernias can be surgically repaired, and recovery rarely requires long-term changes in lifestyle. Uncomplicated hernias are principally repaired by pushing back, or "reducing", the herniated tissue, and then mending the weakness in muscle tissue.

Romona, When i had my transplant there was a certain amount of pain for around a year. Then my thigh started to become numb and the doc. said it would go away. Well that took several years to go away. I always had a certain amount of discomfort with the new kidney. When i slept it was the worse i had to sleep with my left hip up cause it took awhile to get used to sleeping on it. The whole area was and still is sensitive to touch. Now that the kidney is no longer functioning i get sharp pains there every so often.

I got a call from my nephrologist Friday that he had results from my ultra sound I had Tuesday. I have fluid collecting around one of my kidneys (I had gotten 2 kidneys from a small child). I am going for tests tomorrow. I'm a little nervous.

Did you ask them what the procedure is for this? I just hope they fix the problem and you are painfree again soon, please keep us posted :cuddle;

The irony of all this, is the pain is not as bad as it was. I would get mostly on the weekends when I was doing some major house work. I didn't have any at all this weekend. I'll post as soon as I get back. I have tests at 7:45, transplant clinic at 9:30 and sleep clinic at 4:00. It will be a very long day! Thanks for all of the moral support. :)

I had some slight intermittant pain in the area of the transplant for around two years after the surgery. I mentioned this to my neph who said it was likely surgical adhesions causing it and that it should go away over time. I would feel it most often while walking or while lying on my right side. The good news is that it did go away over time and there is nothing there in terms of pain or any unusual sensations now. If you are feeling something it is most likely not a sign of anything being wrong with the kidney. If it changes or gets worse I would talk to your docs about it.

I had a voiding cytogram done today. That was fine. No reflux or anything like that. I saw the surgeon that did my transplant. He said there is an obstruction in one of the kidneys. He wants to try to put a stent in. If that doesn't work, I will lose the kidney. I'll keep you all posted.

My coordinator called me today. The obstruction wasn't there when I had an x-ray in September. This is something that just happened with in the last few weeks. She said it sometimes happens with small kidneys. They are going to try to do the stent Nov 14th.

Just read this. Sorry to hear about your pain. I hope that the insertion of the stent will do the trick and releve you of pain and not the loss of the kidney.

Thank you all for the well wishes. My sister is picking me up at 4:15 a.m. I am to going to have a nephrostogram and nephrostomy. I am going to the short stay unit. I'll let you know what happens. I am nervous and wish I was done already. I'll update all of you when I get back. :)

I had the nephrostogram done. I can not believe this, but the obstruction is gone. The kidney is swollen a little bit and there is still some fluid around it. I didn't have to have the nephrostomy. The Interventional Radiology department is going to talk to transplant clinic. I'll call tomorrow and see what is going on. Thank all of you for your prayers. I believe your prayers helped with this miracle. :angel; :angel; :angel;

I talked to my coordinator today. They still have to figure out what the fluid is from. I should find out early next week what the next step is. In the mean time I am scheduled to see my gynecologist to rule out a problem there that maybe causing pain. I see him on Black Friday. I don't think that is where the pain is coming from. I had an ablation done in June. I had all sorts of tests before I had that done.

I thought it was time for an update. I don't need the stent. The smaller of the two kidneys is draining slow. But there is no blockage. So they are thinking the pain is not kidney related. I saw the OB/GYN today. My exam was fine. He wants some more ultra sounds, he doubts he will find the cause of my pain. This is such a mystery.

I am baking cupcakes right now for a bake sale tomorrow. Anyway, the pain is back, it comes and goes. I am thinking I missed home ec the day they said to prevent injury stretch before baking. ;)
I hope they figure this out soon.
