Title: For the Ladies....and maybe a few men, I dont judge...
Post by: meadowlandsnj on September 22, 2007, 06:48:41 PM
I want to have a thread about make-up and beauty products and such things.  I really believe if you look good you feel good.  At least that's my philosophy the last few months.  I've been spening some more time getting ready to go to dialysis and even Shp Rite and I feel better!!
And if any guys have anything to throw in........... :clap;

I don't use a lot of make-up.  I wear black mascara, a silver inner eye liner (brings out the eyes without l0oking too garish or made up, if I wear eye shadow (rarely) it's an earth tone color.  I don't wear lipstick, it looks clownish and funny on me but I do use gloss sometimes, clear.
I don't really use liquid foundation but I do use Revlon minerals powder, it adds a smooth finish and cuts down on my flaws.  Just a light dusting.  I do use blush, my absolute favorite is NARS Orgasm blush!  It's a peachy, pinky color that looks good on anyone.  It's a bit pricey at 22$ but you can get it cheaper on Ebay or on sale.. One compact lasted me 3 years so......I put it on the apple of my cheek, then do a dusting on the side of my eyes (I saw this on Tyra show with a makeup artist, makes the blush look more natural) Never try to "Sculpt" your face, it looks fake and if you have a round face (like me) no amount of blush will slim it down, believe me  ;))  Those bronzers they have out now look orange on me so I have to pass.  No need to look like an Ummpah Loompah.  :o
I've been told I look good lately at dialysis even a doctor told me I looked like I was feeling good.  I know appearance isn't everything and all that but I LIKE looking good for MYSELF.
As for fragrance, I like Bath and Body type smells like Moonlit Path or Philosophy Grace line or the CLEAN line of scents, my latest is CLEAN Laundry smells just like those dryer sheets!  But my old stand by is White Musk by The Body Shop, my absolute favorite!
I also have to use a clarifying shampoo like Suave, my har tends to be oily.  I use Safeguard or Coast soaps, I like smelling soapy fresh, not flowery or too sweet.

Anyone else??

I love the mineral foundation - I use the Phys. Formula version, although I like the little brush-encased tubes that Neutrogena sells as well.

I'm with you on the not wanting to smell too sweet - but I like the citrus body washes.  Anything orange or lemon wakes me up, so it's a good way to start the day.  I used to get a beer and citrus shampoo that I loved, but they stopped making it.  The only time I like smelling sweet is when I make my own sugar scrubs - I like to add honey and vanilla.  The smell doesn't last long after the shower with that anyhow.

If I'm feeling exceptionally girly, I like to paint my nails, but I can't have them painted and sculpt.  I can't see if I have any bits of clay under my nails when they are painted and it ends up getting streaks of color on different bits of clay when I'm handling them.

Well, since I am allergic to everything on the market, including hypoallergenic make up, I do not wear makeup at all. However i try to keep the hair subdued in a nice cut and i try to wear some nice things to work. Yes, I need a new wardrobe but everything looks blah right now. So...what is a girl to do?

Hmmm...since getting married, I've been wearing less makeup.  ;D I've got him, so what do I need to impress him for?  ;) As for makeup, for everyday wear, I only use a concealer (Revlon Colorstay) if my face breaks out. I always use Almay powder in a compact tho because it does a great job of keeping breakouts at bay. I also use a brown eyeliner (brand doesn't matter). If I'm going out somewhere nice (which rarely EVER happens!), I'll use some brown and cream eye shadow by Cover Girl and some Maybelline brown mascara. If I'm feeling really brave, I might add some nude lipstick that my Uncle gave me from his company (NOT a lipstick fan!). As for perfumes and such, my husband is somewhat allergic to most, nor can he really smell them due to a decreased sense of smell, so I don't wear them unless I go on a job interview. As I get older, I seem to have gotten lazier about makeup and such!

I just recently purchased SheerCover mineral make-up and i love it, i have only worn it once, i only wear make-up when we go out (shows what kind of life i have huh) lol,  I haven't worn my contacts in awhile though but i think i'll pop those in and see if i can still use them without running into walls :P  as for my hair (what hair)  it's more of a wash and wear or i just pin it up on the top with a claw/clip and out the door i go, lol,  (i aint trying to impress anyone, can you tell) lol,  I would hope people are looking more at my personality than at my appearance (at least that is what i am hoping ) ;)

I am extremely girly but since I have a 2 year old (almost 3) and am a stay at home mother, glamor has taken a waaaaaaay back seat.  However, some things I like are Clinique Double Matte Face Powder--like foundation and it is so light!  I LOVE Boots!  I use their microdermabrasion cream, moisturizer, facial cleanser, lip gloss....oh, I could really go crazy at one of their stores but I have to settle for what the rest of the crazed Boots fans left at Target.....my favorite splurge is perfume and I like French perfumes.  They are so intoxicating!  BUT, I rarely wear make up or perfume unless the babysitter is free and my hubby and I are going out.....

I know I am starting to feel better when the make up goes on!!

I am a true believer in going ala natural. But when I am not wanting to scare people, I wear Prescriptives foundation. it covers all of the flaws from the lupus scars. Everything else is mainly Clinique as my ex roommate used to work at their counter and needed to make so much in sales. k

For performes I kind of like the Escada line. I don't musky or the heavier spice scented kind.

Make-up does make out self-esteem go up a notch though.

for years I used to refresh my make-up and my perfume right before my husband got home from work. I like it, I still wear make-up fairly often, and putting on a spray of either "HAPPY" or "SHALIMAR" is the last thng I put on in the morning, and after my bath at night. I love perfume.  I don't do too much with my hair, just brush it and spray a bit of hairspray. The days I dont wear any makeup- I feel ugly without it. So then, I'm not happy.

I think it's such a mental thing. The simple act of putting on a little bit of lipstick or a spritz of perfume means we are doing something positive for ourselves.

Now maybe if i can go beyond the foundation....maybe get my but to the gym or at least walk around the block a couple of times!! just think what that would do??!!

Makeup does boost self-esteem.  On a day to day basis, I am sans makeup.  (caveat - I dye my eyebrows)  What is really fun though is the look of surprise on a date's face when you turn up with your hair down, contacts in and makeup on.  We laugh about it at work because by day, I'm pretty mousey.  But every once in a while, I'll have to get ready to go out at the office - and then they see a different side of me.  It is funny, the one time I was in full "going out" regalia and had to see my nephrologist, he kissed my hand.  People do react to you differently, but I think that part of it is the way that you feel about yourself.

Funny, I've never been dressed up at the dialysis unit.  I always wear old casual clothing.  I think that comfort is the overriding reason, but I also think that deep down, there is some resentment.  (well, maybe not so deep eh??)

Wearing old clothes to dialysis isn't about resentment - it's just practical.  I'm not wearing something that can't be bleached when there's a good chance it's going to end up with blood on it.  Now that I'm on home, it's always sweats or jammies during dialysis, and I'm back to wearing nice things when I go somewhere.

I just started wearing nice clothing, to work and at home. I still don't wear make up, too much to worry about, I suppose. I can barely get a shower and get dressed and out the door in time for work, forget about looking pretty!!! I haven't worn make up since. Um. January I think. A funeral. And I looked worse with it than I did with it!

Nope - it is not just practicality on my part there is definitely resentment...

I always try and look my best. Looking back, I notice that the times in my life that I didn't take the time to do something with my hair or put on a little makeup and wear baggy clothes all of the time were the times when my self esteem was the lowest - kidney disease or not. I really do it for me, not anyone else although I do have a job in sales so it is important to look pulled together. I had to go straight to dialysis from work and I was the only one who was sitting in the chair with high heels sticking out from under the blanket!!

I think i would look rather silly in make up. However i will tell you when i was little my older sister would hold me down and put on eyeliner cause i have long eyelashes. I'm still in therapy!

Everyday i slap it on  :rofl;  I never go anywhere without my makeup on ! My nails are long and usually have nail polish on them . I look after my hair, i wear perfume most all the time . I think if you dont make the effort you end up falling into a trap of not bothering at all. Even though im not going anywhere .. you never know i might have to answer the door to a hansom delivery driver  :rofl;

I totally agree, that if you look better you feel better!

While on dialysis at home or clinic i wouldn't bother with make-up or anything but i would make sure my hair was nicely done and i felt at least half decent!

If I'm having a big night out i will go to the trouble with the make-up, hair, accessories, the whole lot, but most days if I'm just going to the shops, movies or out to eat i will just keep it casual with my three most important objects, Sunscreen protective moisturizer, lip balm and eyelash curler.  ;D

 Oh dear I'm blushing, that was a nice thing to say. I'm going to tell Rita what you said and see if she agrees.
