I do and its the best it totally relaxes me and puts me to sleep.. My Doctor says its benign and harmless adn it really works well. Just wanted to make sure it wasnt dangerous cuz I get a couple shots of it every dialysis treatment...

It's good that it works for you but you should be aware that long term use of Benedryl may cause depression in some people.
Check out: http://www.medicinenet.com/diphenhydramine/article.htm for other possible side effects. If you aren't having any of the side effects then maybe you should keep using it as long as you need it. :2thumbsup;
Mike sometimes takes it at night when he can't fall asleep. Works good as a sleeping pill.

I couldn't of done hemo without it... my nurse was awesome... I didn't even need to ask... as soon as I sat in my chair she would come ask me if I needed any Benedryl before she got too busy... loved that stuff.

isn't it the shit?!!! I love it, it relaxes my whole body and knocks me out within seconds. Hey angle do u have myspace?
-
When i was in-center i would arrive at 4:30 a.m. I would stay awake the whole night before so that way i could sleep (but only with my benadryl of course) :p But i loved how you got that burning sensation throughout your body and then it was like a good high, lol, ohhh yeah, it was the shit allrighty, the pills dont seem to work as good but they do relax me pretty darn good :2thumbsup;

I use it all the time as a sleeping pill at home. The active ingredient is the exact same ingredient as many of the over the counter sleeping pills. If you get the generic version, it's a lot cheaper than the sleeping pills too! Vets recommend Benedryl for dogs who need to be calmed down before a car trip too.

Wonderful stuff!!! I take it to knock me out, works wonders, MUCH better than sleeping pills!

Dang, that stuff doesn't do a thing for me! I can take a tripple dose and still function normally at work. :(
I think I'm missing something here.

Yeah, I'm the same way. When I first started dialysis, I was having problems with insomnia, and my doc suggested benadryl. I tried it, and it didn't do squat. I was then prescribed Elavil, which is an antidepressant, and it worked well. I'm still on it even though I no longer battle depression. I am going to ask my doc to lower my dose, because I don't think I need as big a dose as I'm on right now.

Hmmm, never used it before. I pretty much pass out right away once I'm hooked up. I start up my ipod and go right to sleep...I guess it helps that I start dialysis at 6 am. ;)
-
On some people it actually works the opposite..Theres a lady that sits next to me in my clinic and she tried it and she said it made her hyper and restless.. Im just glad it works the way it does on me..Basically if i wake up through the night I just call the nurse and tell her to give me anther injection and im out again..Honestly I dont know how I would sleep all night on the machine without it.

The IV version is what the thread was about. If you are wondering what's the difference that is it. I had the injections while I was in the hospital to help me relax and sleep and it worked like a champ. It is night and day depending on how it is used, orally or intravenously.

I went to visit the dialysis center here yesterday. I will start dialysis probably on Saturday. The nurse told me that it will be a breeze because they will give me benadryl. Won't I still be sleepy when it is time to go home????
-
Depends on how well you metabolize it.
-
I take OTC Benadryl a lot of the time for either allergies or insomnia. I will ask at my Dialysis Unit tomorrow. I go at 5:30 am three days a week. I watch TV and find myself falling asleep almost every time I go.
-
they just give you guys benadryl injections at the hospital? thats awesome, i wish i could get that hemo is so friggin boring

Hospital or clinic, i dont think it matters where, usually if you ask for it you can get it. Good luck, i hope you get some Fluffy :2thumbsup;

thanx i hope so too ;D id rather spend 4 hours in la la land than watch bad tv and stare at ppl i dont know lol. altho i always figured that the dialysis would remove most chemical stuff from your blood and make it less effective
-
we get nothing here in our centre. you either fall asleep yourself or just sit there bored out of your brain....luckily I now do dialysis at home, at night, so I get to sleep anyway :waving;.. Liz

I'm at my center now for my nocturnal treatment and I'm getting my first of 2 benadryl shots in 5 minutes woo hoo!!!! :beer1;
-
Sweet Dreams Neo ;) ;) Hope you have a smooth run :2thumbsup;

So does that mean that benadryl is ok for the kidneys even if
you are pre-dialysis? I keep asking my doctors if there is anything
I can take for congestion or a cold and they always say no.
Luckily I haven't had a cold for some time.

Yes, it's fine to take it. I think when you ask about taking cold stuff, the key word is congestion. Decongestants are bad because they reek havoc on your blood pressure, which can further damage your kidneys. I took Mucinex D recently and found out the hard way. My BP shot up to 207/117! That's probably why they say no. Benadryl does not contain a decongestant.
