Amanda's situation is something I've wondered about for awhile now - if you get a kidney and it doesn't work right away, do you remain on dialysis until it does, or do they hold off to see if it will start working? If they wait, how long do they wait, or is it dependent on how ill you get? If they do keep you on dialysis, how do you know if/when the kidney starts working?
Again, just curious about all this. Thanks.

Yes, I believe you continue dialysis until (if) the new kidney wakes up and gets going. You still need to have toxins removed from the system if there isn't a (working) kidney to do it.
I've seen several inpatients in my unit that have had transplants that are taking time to wake up. As far as I know all of them have after a little while... so prayers for Amanda!

Yes they will do dialysis.
Sometimes people can still stay on dialysis for several weeks until the kidney starts functioning.
They will start knowing by lab work and or urine production when the kidney is up and working. They are most likely doing lab work everyday.
