Hey my name is karen and I'm 22 years old. I was diagnosed with kidney disease at age 13, and was told I would most likely need a kidney transplant sometime in my 20s. Well as it turned out the doctors were right and I am indeed on the list. I started dialysis in April 2007. My goal was to do PD, but due to the fact that I have Spina Bifida, that was not an option- well it turned out that it wasn't an option AFTER I had surgery!!! Needless to say my doctor at the time completely screwed me over- he claimed that he didn't know I had a shunt and that is something I DON'T believe, but needless to say I had a hard time dealing with him and his 'mistake'. I now do hemodialysis and had my surgery for the AV fistula June 28th and will soon be using it- yay! Some days are easier than others and honestly there have been times where I cannot handle it- but that's normal and I do know I'm lucky in lots of ways and I appreciate things more. More later

Hello and :welcomesign; Karen. Spina Bifida and kidney disease, sounds like you really got a raw deal. My little brother (Well not so little he's 28) also has Spina Bifida so I am familiar with all the things you must deal with on that front as well. You have found the best place in the world for information on dialysis so look around, ask some questions, and keep on keeping on.
