In May,I had put in the orginal papers for disability since my school felt I could no longer do the job-thought I would explore the possibility of disability. Not what I thought I would be at this point in my life, but, being jobless forces you into new situations. Last week, I got the letter of approval plus a check for back pay. Everyone is stunned that it went through so fast. I only had one phone call and one set of papers to release my medical papers. So my last paycheck is this month, and 1st disability check comes next month. I am so relieved. Not as much as a paycheck, but I now can take better care of myself. I will miss being at school, and all the students--but we all know how much our lives keep changing, and we are not in control of most of the changes. Only down side, once someone else says you quality for disability-- you realize you just might really be sick!!

Congratulations on your approved status. :bandance;

Paris, don't forget you can still earn a certain amount of money while collecting disability. I've been working 2 days a week, and really enjoying it. Maybe you can find something part time that keeps you involved with kids.

congratulations on the super fast approval, mine took 9 months. the one thing i don't understand though is how the school district got away with not renewing your contract under the americans with disabilities act??
-
It is a private school and each year we get a new contract. There are more teachers on IHD dealing with the same problem. jbeany--thanks, I will look into that. I am not one to sit around for too long and still need to feel productive.

Paris, I'm so glad it was approved so quickly without hassle and you will start collecting it so soon.
I've heard in Ohio it takes 5-6 mos. to get it approved and they don't do back pay.
Good to hear good news.

i fully understand what you're saying, however private schools are not exempt and if the only reason they didn't renew your contract was because you are ill, they have broken the law. under some circumstances ada has some very big teeth. they can however manufacture a legal reason and there isn't much that can be done about it.

That is a load off your mind for sure! I agree with jbeany...you have a gift of working with children, so maybe you can find some way to work with children without the strain and exhaustion of a full time job. I'm so happy things are going your way!!! :clap; :2thumbsup;
