Title: Studdering
Post by: goofynina on August 16, 2007, 10:39:45 PM
My Godson, who will be 13 soon, is staying with us a couple of days and i am getting really worried on how bad his studdering is.  Does anyone know anything or anyone who studders or used to studder and how they were helped.  He is very self conscious and he gets aggravated at himself for not being able to get the words out.   Does anyone have any suggestions?   Thank you in advance...  :grouphug;

singing can really help with this, goofynina. or, reciting poetry - loudly - too. but singing gives confidence to the stutterer and helps to overcome it, eventually.
(my younger brother was a chronic stutterer for most of his life- but not now...)

Have him learn some sign language to help some of it.

i know the poetry thing works, goofynina. my brother cured himself of this problem that he'd had for most of his life. he found that it was easiest when he yelled the poetry near noisy, heavy machinery, where he worked. the noise helped to keep him from being self-conscious about what he was doing.
it didn't take long to work, either.

 :bow;  Lightlizard, we found some good poetry books for him and i have personally been with him while he reads aloud,  and might i add, HE LOVES IT,  you see, he doesnt read much in school due to the fact that he studders so badly, so here, he can read out loud with mistakes and all and he knows Nina isnt going to make fun of him and/or get mad at him for taking so long,  but just to let you know, in this little bit of time that we have been reading, 4 days now,  his reading has increased so much, he still studders at time but he also needs to remember to breathe, i notice that has alot to do with it, he starts reading out of breath so i told him to take a deep breath in from his nose and as he reads release the breath from his mouth, it has been working great,  THANK YOU SO MUCH LightLizard for the recommendation, i know it's not going to happen overnight but i feel that we are on the right track  :clap;

give it time, and i know you will. the fact that he enjoys it is the biggest plus of all, and your advice regarding the breath is invaluable! good going nina!
