Title: Hip replacement
Post by: Red from Canada on August 16, 2007, 10:17:44 AM
Has anyone else ever had a hip replacemnt while on dialysis?  Was it a bad recovery time?  How well did you heal?
I am scheduled  for one in December due to Osteoncrosis of the left hip and the doctor was not too forthcoming as to what to expect.  I also have a heart condition and type 2 diabetes and am scared that this will be difficult.  Any encouraging words from those who have done it?

Hey Red, my husband had his hips done 1st time 9 mos after transplant, my advice is have some one stay with you the first few weeks if at all possible so you can really rest, My mother-in-law stayed with us. He was of course was sore the first 2 weeks but after that never took meds, hope all goes well for you..

Hi Angela, Yes, I am 67 years old and have 3 grown kids and 3 grandchildren and a very helpfull spouse.  I sure want to be around for them, but I have been warned that it is riskier for me because I am overweight(Ha) and inactive.

Oh ok, I figured you must be over 50 if they are so willing to do the hip replacement. I'm in need to joint replacements but they don't want to do them yet due to my age, i'm 28. You will be around for your family, I think you should do what's best for you and what the dr says is best for you... what do they say about the weight issue with the type of surgery?

I am so sorry about your problems Angela.  I know they told me that a knee or hip replacement only lasts 10 years.  That's why they are so reluctant to do yours, but maybe if they went ahead, you would have 10 better years while your kids need you and by then they will come up with something better.
Maybe get a second opinion?

I agree with you, I shall indeed be looking for a second opinion.:)
