Title: So excited to start nocturnal
Post by: brenda on August 14, 2007, 09:20:19 PM
I am so excited, only a couple more weeks before I start training (Sept 04). Because I have always workled full time I have had to run in the evening. I have not had more than a max of 2 evenings off in a row for 14 years. Now to think I will have seven! what the heck am I going to do with myself??? It's going to be great!!!   :yahoo;

I was just reading Rolando's thread about over shooting your target weight. Something I hadn't really thought about is I don't have a target weight and I don't weigh in or out. I totally go by feel. I know personally when I have had enough and then that's enough. I come off feeling fine. I have lower bp's just naturally. I guess I do use bp's as my gauge a little. And I also have always weight ramped. But now doing nocturnal how the heck am I going to determine a dry weight? Haven't had one of those for 10 years. Pretty sure I don't weigh the 42 kilo's I started on dialysis with. Hmmm I need to figure that out I guess.

Congratulations on getting ready to start nocturnal, Brenda. I'm also going to be switching to nocturnal by the end of the year (I'm on short-daily right now). As soon as my centre starts offering it, I will be one of the first patients to be switched over. It will be SOOOOOOO nice to have my days back, and since I will be doing nocturnal on the NxStage, I won't have to spend too much time setting up the machine in the evening or cleaning it in the morning. Out of curiosity, which machine will you be using?

It's called a "Formula" it's the new machine they are converting home patients to rather they do nocturnal or regular. Don't really know much about it yet other than it is a fair bit smaller that my C3 i have had for 14 years. In center they have changed over to a "Phoenix". We don't have the luxury of nxstage here in Canada.

Hi Brenda , I used to live in Calgary but I was transfered back to Toronto many years ago.   Why did it take 14 years to do nocturnal.  I will be on dialysis in 2- 3 years  ( or more I hope) and I have already told my doctor that I want home nocturnal from the start.  It is obvious that I don't know much about the routine so maybe you can give advise on the steps and what I need to do to convince whoever makes  the decision.  How long is the training ?

I really like the fact that you work.  I do not plan to stop either. Thanks

Being Canadian I guess you know how slow progress is here. Nocturnal has only been available here for about 2 years. Up until a few months ago you had to go to Calgary to train and they wanted you there for about 4 weeks. Working full time didn't allow me to do that. Until I had surgery last Nov my work did not know I was a dialysis patient. Now we can train here in Lethbridge and it only takes about 2 weeks. Also I still have the same C3 I have had from the start and there are no longer parts available for it. I had to train on something new so I figured I'd do it all and go nocturnal. Here in Lethbridge and Calgary it is the Home Training program that got the Nocturnal started.

WOW ,  they didn't even know !    I've told my company already but they know how I work so I have no concern.   Toronto started home hemo many years ago and I met the fellow who was one of the 1st doing nocturnal here.  He slept at the hospital every night because it was just a trial.
As I said before , please keep us up to date on how things work out.  Whats good and whats bad ?   Best of luck.

Just finished 3rd day of nocturnal training. A little worried here. Anybody here do nocturnal then get up and get ready and go straight to work? I know it's only been a couple of days, but holy cow do I NOT feel like I could go to work right away. My potassium has been very low, like way too low.. less than 2.0. My phosphate has dropped out of sight and my calcium has gone up.  Basically I feel like crap! I am sure it will get better. Next week I am working as normal then training after.

Tonight was my final night of training and I am exhausted. Still concerned about doing this and going to work after. I will try it for a bit and see how it goes but didn't let the water guys unhook everything downstairs just in case I decide to go back to conventional. They delivered my supplies today for 6 weeks, wow, there is a lot of supplies. My machine comes tomorrow but won't be running tomorrow night. I need to come home after work and sort out all this stuff. Friday night will be my first run here at home, on my own. I'm kind of a control freak and being awake the whole time and in control is how I have been doing this for 14 years. The idea of trying to sleep, and not having the control is making me very nervous. I have managed to work out a "dry weight" which is something I have never had before. Always preferred to go by feel (the control thing again). Guess I'll just wing it.

Brenda,

about the work thing I find If i finish by about 6.30am it gives me a couple of hours of time so I can slowly get ready for work, I believe you need a recovery period. You will be in control, don't worry, set everything up appropriately no alarms etc, you will be fine.  :grouphug;

What pump speed will you be running at ? Have they given you a sensor for bleeding ? I have been given a "bed wetting sensor" that get taped to your arm instead, so if there is any chance of leakage, needle falling out you are woken up.I have attached a pic of the one I have.

You'll be right, just have the initial "scared " time like we all do, the best thing someone said to be about the dialysis machine, was treat it like a car, afterall its just another machine.....that got rid of the "scared" factor. With the fourteen years experience you have it will be like you are on holidays! think of all the free time you will have !  :cuddle;

brenda for potassium they can add stuff to your bath if it is going to low'  takes a while to get used to sleeping with the machine!!  Hubby has been working for the past month.  he gets of the machine about 7 a.m and is at work by 8. Brenda pm me anytime if you want info or just to chat. I don't mind!!  Been at nocturnal for a year now!!

OK, One night that's all it took for me. Sorry if anyone is disappointed but I am done with that!! I didn't like the feeling during training of the blood going back and forth with the double pump. I definitely don't like it lying down. The RO is so loud and just thunks through all my hardwood floor's. And because I run such low bp's all the time I had to fight to get up get my s**t together and think of how the h*ll to give myself saline. No I need to be in more control with that. Good luck to anybody who does it or wants to do it, it just isn't for me.
