I have a small balcony and I'm looking for hearty plants that will fit in a tight space. The area gets direct sunlight. I live near San Diego so the sun shines most of the time here. I'm amazed at what a green thumb I have with my indoor plants however anything outdoor forget it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I wish I could help you. I sure do not
have a green thumb. Have had to go to artificial plants.
They are nice but I love real plants and would like to
be able to do well with them. I've had all kinds with no luck.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking about a small palm for one of my selections.

I know we have different plants over here :ukflag; but really anything that can be grown in the garden , can be grown in a tub . I have done it here because i found gardening to tiring for me. I have also grown some veg in pots , which is nice to be able to go and pick some fresh food ! If you have roses over there , they are always nice both to look at and for the scent, plus a few in a vase always brightens things up !

Excellent ideas Kickstart. Thanks for the reply. I would love to have miniature roses.

The black thumb lives over here. I would think a little container garden of spices would be good to grow. My mother planted some spices and it really took off in her front yard. Looks pretty too. Basil, cilantro, parsley, and etc might work well for a small starter graden. My sister planted tomatoes and they really took off.

Kitkatz, fresh herbs sound wonderful. Basil and cilantro are two of my favorites.

In Nashville i lived in a condo with a woman i was seeing at the time. We had tomato plants and roses. Our condo was the last built so we got allot of sun. I wasn't sure how the roses would do but they did fine. I was amazed at how tomato's we got too. I built little boxes on the balcony along the railing and put the in them. I used whatever i had to for bugs.

Thanks for the response Keefer. I hope I have luck with roses. I think I'll try planting a few herbs too.

many think coleus (sp) is just a house plant, but outside they grow bigger leaves and brighter colors. just about anything will grow in a container.

Thanks for the suggestion Grammalady.I researched the Coleus plant on the net. They are colorful and low maintenance.

For a balcony, maybe you'd need a slow growing palm so that it doesn't overtake too much space, There's two I can think of, firstly a Chinese fan palm (chameoropis) or there's another similar looking one called Traccycarpus Fortunai which is usually more expensive. They can both withstand winter frosts, chameoropis down to -6 Celsius and the Traccycarpus will withstand temperatures down to -22 celsius thats why it's more expensive. Make sure the pots they are in are well drained, as the roots don't take well to a contantly saturated compost especially through the winter.

Hi Angellady. I don't know what to tell you about outdoor plants. I have a few indoor plants that do really well. I'm surprised I've kept them alive this long. I have a Jade plant which I thought was a rubber tree, also an umbrella plant (my favorite), some kind of an ivy and a philodendron that produces these weird little flowers. Someone called it an angel philodendron or something like that.
My grams said a somekind of palm would be good for ur balcony. That is the next plant i want to get. I need something for the other corner, it's bare.
Good luck finding something you like.
