Title: So yeah I was at my son's basketball game and..... You won't believe this story!
Post by: Epoman on March 28, 2006, 11:20:33 PM
One of the officials came up to me and told me that the "ref" told him if I don't back up he would give me a "Technical Foul" I told him ask him WHY? he said because I am too close to the court, now I was in the same area as the COACH and he told him nothing. I am the assistant coach and I was not crossing the line or going on the court, I was just doing the same thing the coach was doing, coaching the players. He said my chair has metal and the players could get hurt, I told him well the regular sitting chairs that the players use are metal too and those are lined up next to the court.  ??? ::)

Bottomline is I told the official to tell the "Ref" if he gives me a "technical" for being in a wheelchair, the Y.M.C.A. would have a lawsuit on their hands and I told him it's against the A.D.A (Americans with Disabilities Act) laws to discriminate against me because of me being in a wheelchair. I told him in a stern voice (even though I had no problem with the official). So I saw the official tell the "Ref", I think he understood, because I never got a "Technical"  (I never did move, I just kept on coaching) later after the game I went up to the official and asked him what the "Ref" said and he said "I told him exactly what you said, and I think he learned something today"  ;D >:D

See this is the kind of shit you have to put up with when you are in a wheelchair. But you can bet your ass I know my rights!  8) >:D ;)

Kind of along the same line........ I have a disabled placard for my car.  I forgot to hang it up today at work where I park "every damn day" and I got a ticket for $275.  GEEZ  I agree with the price for those parking in a handicapped zone, but I HAVE a placard it just wasn't hanging up.  I'm going to fight it.   8)

Good on you Epoman, I wouldn't have moved either. It's not like you were an irate parent yelling and screaming on the side line. How ridiculous... Actually my daughter's team got a tech foul last week because one of the parents was yelling at the ref.. then his daughter got one as well, you can tell they are from the same family ::) ..Rerun I would fight the parking ticket too, good luck ;) Liz

You go get 'em! I hate to see the discrimination against the handicapped.  I have a friend who just was told to change positions in the school district because she is on dialysis and they thought it would be a problem for her to continue in the aide position in the Severely Handicapped position. Luckily it worked out for her.  I told her to fight them if she did not want to leave her position and take a cut in pay. I know the district is just covering their asses. But we have to watch carefully or "they a being a screwing us!"

Luckily my friend landed in a good position last year. They kept her pay the same and moved her to a learning handicapped classroom from the severely handicapped classroom.  They even kept her pay the same.  She sounds pretty happy about it.

I have found it hard to go anywhere with the wheelchair in tow.  Damn thing is pretty heavy getting it into the car.  Whine! whine!  But I am a brave woman and we continue to get where we need to go.
Did you know you can get two people and a wheelchair into a convertible TransAm?  I did it the other week when transportation for the husband messed up.  It was a heavy lift up over the car doors after I dropped the top on the car.  I wish I had gotten a picture of us driving up to the hospital doors in the car.
