Title: Pd and intercourse... sorry i need to ask..
Post by: maisha_r on July 14, 2007, 08:59:48 PM
I am sorry everybody,  but I would not feel comfortable asking such question to my doctor or nurse, so I am relaying here as I feel less embarrased than asking someone face to face.  Does our sexual life changes with pd? .  see for example we cannot lift or i was told not avobe 10-15 pounds, so can a partner lay top of a pd patient? can we have you know this activity while we are in dwell? what precautions we take besides of covering our exit site?  I have so many questions about it. Once again I am sorry if I dare to ask this,  but I need to know.  I feel insecure about thinking of how this would go with catheter placed right front of my body in the middle of a romantic moment. All comments, information, suggestion would be gladly apreciated.

With a couple of alterations to routine, etc, it is possible.

First, find something to do with the cath to keep it from getting in the way too much. If you use Fresenius, you can ask for immobilizers with your monthly order. It's a piece of tape with a velcro flap. You put the tape on your skin, then use the velcro to hold the catheter in kind of a loop. It's not gone, but it's not as much in the way.

Then find a comfortable position. I'm female, and I'm much more comfortable with me on top because I can keep us from rubbing the catheter too much. My husband is quite heavy (close to 300 lbs) and carries a lot of weight in his belly, and although I'm not heavy, I also have a lot of extra in my belly right now because of PD (I do CAPD, so I always have 2000 ml dwelling), so we have what we call "lazy people's sex". We both lay on our backs/sides kind of facing each other with our pelvises closer than our upper bodies. Not very intimate, but it gets the job done.

Hope this helps a little bit, and don't worry about asking anything. Remember, we're all going through this together!!

LOL, i am laughing cuz i have had some experiences on this very subject (some fun, some frustrating) but dammit, i am gonna get mine one way or another, lol,  these are a few things i have learned about sex and PD

1.  I know what it feels like to be a waterbed
2.  I know how long it takes to drain before i start refilling, i press stop right before it starts filling me up again for the "late night snacks" ;)
3.  Definetly secure that catheter so it is taped safe and snug next to your body (it can get pretty crazy at times) lol

Thanks for replies,  I have got the immobilizers this morning,  they seem to be of good help.

I had my catheter put in 4 weeks ago and I've started PD on 10/22/07.  How long did you guys wait to have sex??  I wasn't sure if there was a 6 weeks restriction like pregancy.  Does it alter the positioning of the catheter?  This is one of my biggest fear.  I don't want the cath to move around too much and cause pain during dialysis.

When I was on PD and going on my Honeymoon this was a big question ...

The tube was the main concern and mt wife was very afraid to touch due to the tube and
not wanting to injury me .

I bought one of the back braces at the drug store and took out the metal rods . This acted like a big
ace bandage and covered up the entire midsection keeping the cathater out of the way .

It worked for us. :bandance;

Did it with no problem.  I kept my cath secured using the netting they gave me at the clinic.  I didn't feel any discomfort.  The next morning I was concern to see how I would drain.  I wasn't sure if it moved my cath inside.  Next morning no problem.  This is a good thing.

Hope over time it will get better and you will get use to having the tube.  At first, I was ashamed to show myself to my hubby because I thought the tube would be a turn off.  For awhile, we did it in the dark.  But now, our love is so strong that it doesn't matter anymore.  I guess you will have to find that comfort zone within yourself and your partner will do the same.  I'm too young and too eager to do without  ;)

Wish you the best.

Oh, baby, you're missing out!!!  The ladies love men who are "on the tube."  It's great because then we can take control of the whole situation!   :mysty:   Tubes are tubes.....  You just tape them up and have fun!!!  I can only imagine what I will be like when I actually reach my sexual prime.....

I think I was misunderstood and mabe misunderstood what you were talking about.
I can't and won't have the "relations" while hooked up to the machine

There were some nights when I had to be connected to the machine at 7:30, while my son's bedtime was not until 8:00...again, you bet we worked around it! Just be careful and somewhat aware of where the tubing is, and you can do it.

I lost my virginity while on PD. Haha, so funny to think about now. So long as your catheter is immobilized and your exit site covered, you can have sex most any way you feel comfortable. Or a company called Patient's Pride makes a stretchy cloth catheter cover. I buy large pantyhose from wal-mart and cut the legs and top waistband off to make a soft catheter cover just so I feel a little more secure. If your catheter isn't totally healed yet and anchored (I think that can take up to four months) I would take it easy while having sex. I've had sex while hooked up to the machine, so I know that is fine though I'd wait until a dwell because draining can sometimes hurt. I'd take it easy at first then as your tube heals and as you become more comfortable with it you will notice that you can do almost everything you could do before.
