WCA Hospital Surgeon First In Area To Use New Kidney Surgery Technique

6/17/2007 - A new procedure at WCA Hospital is giving kidney patients the possibility of delaying dialysis and a shorter recovery time for kidney surgery.
Dr. Ichabod Jung, urologist on staff at WCA Hospital, is the first physician in the area to use a minimally invasive surgical technique called laporascopy for partial removal of the kidney.
‘‘This new technique allows us to take only the part of the kidney tissue that is affected by disease,’’ Jung said. ‘‘It has been very challenging for us, but now we can leave healthy tissue in place. Our patients can continue to have kidney function, which in some cases may delay or eliminate the need for dialysis.’’
Smaller incisions, with fewer complications help patients get back to their normal everyday work and leisure activities sooner.

Jung is also using a new device to control bleeding during surgery. The device is used directly on the surface tissue during surgery and gives surgeons more control as it seals the tissue on contact creating the possibility of virtually bloodless resections, with the potential for less oozing and re-bleeding.
‘‘This control can make even the most technically challenging surgical procedures easier and opens the door to new surgical possibilities,’’ Jung said. ‘‘Any technique that decreases blood loss and minimizes tissue damage will help our patients heal more quickly, with less pain. It’s an exciting and innovative time for surgical care at WCA. Technology, along with clinical expertise, has made giant leaps in improving the safety and outcomes for our patients. Less trauma and controlled bleeding decrease the possibilities of post operative complications, which is always a priority.’’
